Have you ever heard of the salt trick? If you're drinking in a place that also serves food just ask for some salt, that fixes it. Shaking salt onto a coaster or napkin when condensation (or spilled beer) 'glues' the coaster/napkin to your glass will keep it from sticking.

The annoyance I find most annoying are threads that ask what annoys me. It’s aggravating, irritating, exasperating, irksome and vexatious.

Seriously, though, stouts being served too cold in beer bars that should know better is a serious peeve for me. If the stout I want is in the same fridge as the lagers, it’s a bewildering WTF moment for me. I almost hit the floor at Outro Lado in Lisbon a few months ago when they told me they had different fridges at different temperatures for different styles. Holy common sense Batman!

As a Midwesterner this is a new one on me, but then, I live on the barren prairie which some folks say isn’t really part of the Midwest. I think someone would get a weird look here if they called a beer a pour. I will call a beer a “brew” as a compliment or change of pace but that’s the extent of my fancy beer lingo.

Unknowingly 10 months olds sometimes, but it’s why things are archived, and new guys come on probably every day so it’s new to them.

So is it a beer you’ve had in your possession for 6 months? If it’s been stored cold and handled right I would think 6 months would still be ok. I thought I've seen it noted that Klimmish doesnt release the cans before they’re 13 weeks old. I’ve had 4-5 month old HT and it was as good as ever and I’m one of “those guys”, I’m a real freshness freak. Agree with SN, they’re really state of the art in low oxygen levels.

One big pet peeve of mine: if there’s anything that annoys me more than being served a beer in a Shaker pint, it’s getting a plastic pint cup.

I know these are safer than glass in outdoor areas, and are becoming more common for sanitary reasons due to the pandemic (single-use, rather than potentially spreading germs if the glass wasn’t properly washed), but I find that these things cheapen the drinking experience for anything that is more than a light beer. Plus, I find that the plastic interferes with the flavor somehow.

I'll just speak a bit to my own personal experience here so YMMV, I've talked about this several times when it's come up in other threads. It's a multi-part issue.

Even a diligent beer buyer can get bogged down by all the bullshit dealing with out-of-codes. It can take weeks or months to get expiring or expired product taken care of. A lot of the time, you just get swaps so you're just perpetually stuck with expiring product. It's not productive to give fresh replacements of something that isn't selling but that's how it is.

In general, reps and merchandisers are supposed to pull OOC or inform you that product is expiring. In practice, at least with the larger distributors, that pretty much never happens. Smaller distributors are much better about taking care of it because they generally have fewer accounts and actually care about the products they represent. They're much more pleasant to deal with on OOCs.

At the end of the day, yes, the fault lies with the buyer. They may not care. They may really care but run a much larger department than it really should be, along with their other duties. They may have no power/authority to discount product that is expiring soon to get rid of it. It could be any myriad of things, it's pretty case by case. It's no excuse but that's just what can happen.

Isn't this standard at beer fests?

Dale, maybe that is something he did in the past?

I bought a four-pack of Heady Topper last month (I have two cans left) and on the bottom of the can is: Canned: 7/15/20. Those beers were very fresh when I purchased them.

    Cheers!

Hence partly why I don’t like most American beer fests, including our version of Oktoberfest - give me a solid glass mug any day.

I don’t like tasting festivals, either. I want a chance to drink a lot of good beer in quantity at a bench with friends.

Maybe it was from the tape he made many years ago, he thought the beer better with a few weeks age on them so after canning he held them back. It was an older interview done in the cannery, well before my first trip to Vt and before Ray went to Afghanistan, maybe 2007/08?

I've only been to several fests throughout the years, even one at Comiskey Park last Fall. All featured a small 2-5 oz tasting glass. I've never been served anywhere (private keggers decades ago the exception) in plastic cups until the Rona, and then only two places out of several (and I stopped ordering once I knew it was plastic). Most places, at least in Chicago, are still serving draft in glass.

I thought I also remember a Red Voodoo or something along that line to go with the Blackened which I dabbled with maybe 25 years ago I’d guess.

That was Dixie Crimson Voodoo Red Ale - Row 2, beer #4 in the jpeg above. (lousy photo, tho').

Dixie's most notorious (ahead of its time or just bad?) was Dixie White Moose:

I was at a beer store yesterday and I decided to take a look at the Brooklyn section (I don't buy Brooklyn anymore either). Ugh. Their new look from Stephen Doyle's studio is just an absolute mess to my eyes. What a shame.

I’ve attended Wundergarten‘s Oktoberfest two years in a row now, in DC’s NoMa neighborhood, and have been served only in plastic cups. It’s a shame, but a lot of DC places are similar, only especially now because of Rona.

I have no idea what Oktoberfest will look like this year...people in this city are pretty scared by everything going on. The places that I know are doing it, are doing it such a strict and regimented way that I believe stands against the true spirit of Oktoberfest. But, safety is important...

BA's posting to WBAYDN with whiskey and wine and whatever other non-beer they are drinking now. Maybe next week I will post my morning coffee. Shouldn't bother me, but in the back of my mind its just not right.
