Depends on how common it is, and the poster's relation with the thread

Maybe there is a difference in date brewed and date canned?

Could be, I’ll have to see if I can find that clip. I’m pretty sure he held it back for some time, if I find it I’ll post it up.

I do remember buying Reddened Voodoo at Beers of the World in Rochester NY in the early-mid 90's. Seemed to come out a couple years after I first had Blackened Voodoo, IIRC.

I wouldn't mind a revisit, as I liked them both a lot back then, be curious what I would think of them now.

Six weeks, if I recall, or maybe that is when he preferred it.

In this video (starts 3:35) he discusses the topic...

...but no mention of the beer being "held back". (In fact, he seems to say he does can and sell it "before its time", to play off of the old Orson Welles commercial for Paul Masson wines).
He states the beer is "28 days old" when canned. I assume he means 28 days starting with the day it was brewed, so after fermentation, etc.

Maybe that’s what I was remembering, the 28 days old when canned. It’s been years since I’ve seen that clip, I’ll look at it tonight, perhaps he thinks it might be a bit green. At Resident Culture in Charlotte they always have a few beer on tap connected right to the brite tanks, a nice little hook for them, their specialties are NEIPAS, but they also do sours, lagers, they have a young BA program.

I bought Blackened Voodoo quite a bit when I lived in Pa, had to go into NJ to buy it. For back in the day they would be considered progressive retailers, Pete’s Wicked, Belgian Ales, a host of German beers , beers from England. Never had the Red Voodoo though, I’d be up for it.

You know what really grinds my gears? Situations like this:

I have a friend who is super into beer, but sticks really to the lane of IPA/Double IPA. He'll do the big stouts, too. So basically he's like most people in this hobby.

Because it's summer, he'll order a four-pack of "lagers", so he'll text me, like "I had a great lager, you'd love it." It's the use the term "lager" to mean "just a beer-flavored beer" that annoys me. We're playing golf this upcoming weekend and he sent me a message about bringing a pilsner that I will "love." I look it up and it's an "American Pilsner dry-hopped with" a few different hops.

I know it's snobby of me to react this way, and I'm all for people getting "into" lagers, but just because your favorite local brewery (who does mostly NEIPA and does them well) starts making a couple "lagers" doesn't mean they're good or true to style.

I wonder how you would react if you ever visited an 'average' bar in PA? People walk in and simply say to the bartender: "Gimme a lager" and with no further conversation the bartender will serve the customer a Yuengling Traditional Lager.

    Cheers!

I fully feel you here. The part.that drives me nuts is just the lumping of a massive swath of beerdom into the same category, "lager". Even within pale, " beer flavored", lagers the difference between a helles, a pilsner, an AAL, and a pale bock are considerable.

I kinda like when a brewer steps away from typical hops with their Pils. Mason Jar dry hops with mosaic and it’s a terrific beer, and it’s not hopped to PA levels. . If I want something more traditional Old Mecklenburg or Ted Oak is right there.

Misuse of this word bugs me too. We need to generate more usage of one of the the generic terms "pale lager" or "light lager" in place of just saying plain ol' "lager." Helles, Pilsner and AALs seem to be adequately differentiated in everybody's mind when using the term "lager" (even though they are lagers), but it seems like whenever someone uses the word "lager' the last thing they are trying to reference is a bock, dopplebock, etc, but my inclusive mind goes there when hearing that word.

I agree with this statement. Typically when a person utters the term "lager" they are not referring to 'robust' beers like a bock or a dopplebock. They instead means an easy drinking beer that "tastes like beer".

Have you tried Victory Classic Lager yet? I have already purchased three 15-packs of this beer and I am thinking about buying another 15-pack later today.

I don't see Victory beers in my stores anymore so I'm guessing the brewery doesn't distro to Michigan anymore, or maybe just a few of their beer options to the Detroit area.

Yeah but if they would simply include the modifier 'pale' beforehand you'd get a better sense of where they're coming from.

Michael, I was contemplating writing just that but then I thought to myself "this would exclude Yuengling Traditional Lager" which is a popular selling lager (extremely popular in my home state) which happens to be amber in color so...

    Cheers!

Canning started in 2011. I point that out though I know you have had other replies that clarify the misunderstanding about holding back beers. It's just for general knowledge of not only you, but anyone reading this.

In 2008 JK was still spouting that Heady HAD to be consumed ONLY on tap and in a GLASS. Which I bring up as an example of how much everything he says needs to be taken with multiple grains of salt

    And another thing......

The use of the word "hobby" when talking about drinking. Collecting breweriana is a hobby, drinking shouldn't be. If drinking is your hobby, you should reassess what you're doing.

Good point. Everywhere except PA then, I guess.
