At least they're making the effort to try. I had a coworker once who was casually into beer and would ask me if there was anything new I'd recommend. He was firmly in the IPA/DIPA camp and sometimes lighter beers with added flavorings. I'd bring up that I had a delightful beer recently, I'd tell him about it, he'd seem interested and the second I mentioned it was a lager/pilsner, he would be like "It's not worth the money because the alcohol is so low" or "I don't really like lagers because they don't have a lot of flavor." Two seconds ago, you were gearing up to buy it based on my description, what the hell!

You can't fix someone like that. But you can encourage someone who's trying.

I totally agree, and this very friend is often good at buying some lagers to try. That said, I’m trying to convince him to drink the lagers first. He drinks the IPA first because they “have more flavor” and by the time he gets to, say, Vliet by Threes Brewing, the nuance is wasted on him. I’m trying to get him to do the opposite because, let’s be fair, most of these IPAs are the same beer using different ratios of the same trendy hops.

As a distributor I used to warn certain accounts not to buy too much of a product. It looks great until it's a week from date..The best retailers are proactive and start moving close-dated product as specials, etc. A good distributor/retailer partnership can be a fun business experience.

Not many in my small town that have craft and a few imports. I like to shop local but I am finding I need to drive one hour to my favorite large distributor. Just cannot understand why they do not realize they are driving away business.

I attribute this to newer craft beer drinkers, but I hate this lack of open-mindedness.

Yes and yes to both of y'all (that means you @woodchipper ).

Yes, it's bothersome when WBAYDN poster posts his/her wine glass full of wine or glencairn full of brown drink.

But yes, it's totally cool by me if that WBAYDN poster also is a regular poster who just switched from beer to wine/whiskey/coffee/etc. And there's even a few WBAYDN and LNBA heros and legends who can get away with starting their session with something other than beer, because they're heros and legends. They know who they are.

I'd also add this: When I see a wine glass full of vino in WBAYDN, I lower my blood pressure by reminded myself that they *do* serve wine at most bars and pubs. It helps me, might not help you.:stuck_out_tongue:

    Cheers!

Lifestyle might be worse. A lifestyle centered around alcohol probably isn't good.

A lot of folks in alcohol production, and related industries, struggle with keeping things in check. Imagine working all day making sales calls, and sampling beer with clients, then having to out and rep at a brewers night, where you're expected to uphold the brand by drinking all night. It's not healthy.

If I was in the industry I’m sure I’d find my consumption cutting back, the everyday exposure would just be a part of the job I’d probably leave it at work. I drink maybe a beer a night as it is , and on Sat maybe two. Football Sunday’s drive that up a bit too, but rarely more than 3, I just get full fairly easily.

Trust me, if there is a serious aluminum shortage, JK will be on video proclaiming that to properly appreciate Heady and Focal they must be poured only from a bottle into a glass

    Lol, he’s a marketing guy.

But seriously I do drink a good many of these bigger IPAs out of the can, whether it’s HT or Abrasive, Shape of Hops to Come etc. I don't prefer the beer beaten down by vigorous pour, it smells nice but it hurts the beer the last few Oz in that glass. That is only my opinion there is no scientific evidence here to inject. I have a dumb nose anyway, so a good amount of that part in any beer is kinda muted for me anyway, and I don’t mind floaties ganged up at the end.

I find I get a kind of aluminum smell when my nose nears the can. I find I enjoy the "opened up" smell of a beer poured into a glass, especially one as fragrant of hops as Heady or Focal. The smell entering my nose as the liquid enters my mouth increases the pleasure of the taste for me. In speaking to others I find I am far from alone in all these reasons why I enjoy beer so much more when it is poured in a glass.

Having tried it all the ways possible, I think JK actually had it right the first time, straight from tap to glass to mouth at the brewpub is best.

You are one of my favorite posters on the site, so I say this with love, but you have to see the irony of you making this statement just after bashing your buddy the IPA lover because ::gasp:: he thinks lagers are all the same.

I love lagers but I don’t really “understand” them or know what sets them apart. And at least the pale variety I like to drink don’t taste radically different to me, just riffs on the same theme, and I can mostly just tell you which ones I thought were okay, good, or excellent. I have far more experience drinking IPAs, and with those, I can taste miles of difference between different examples from different breweries.

So maybe pump the brakes on blanket statements about which styles of beers lack variety in comparison with other styles. We enjoy what we enjoy, and there is a ton of variety within any category.

I think I understand what you’re driving at, but if we’re being honest with ourselves, beer is a hobby for every one of us by any normal definition of the term. Hobby doesn’t mean “life consuming obsession,” it means a thing you are into, like doing, and do often.

We are posting on a message board dedicated to tasting and discussing beer, we all like to drink and talk about beer to a degree many people would find odd, we enjoy trying many types of beer, and most of us regularly visit breweries in our spare time. If that’s not a hobby, what would you call it?

I think the irksome part for some of us is that "lager" isn't a style.it's a brewing technique used to make tons of styles. I'd agree with you that there's more variety within the IPA style than, say, the helles style, but lagers cover everything from an AAL to a Czech black lager to a weizenbock. People should drink what they like, people who like beer should also learn that lager isn't a style and saying "I don't like lagers" or "all lagers taste the same" is much crazier than saying "all ipas taste the same" (which, I agree, is also a crazy statement)
