In two weeks ill be traveling from southern maryland to atlanta georgia for training for my job. My question is are there any must have oktoberfest beers that are based out of georgia, virginia, north carolina, or south carolina? Looking to pick up some must haves on my way down. So far i'm seeing alot of people talking about mecktoberfest so ill be picking up a 12 pack.

I'm over in TN so have not had the pleasure of trying Mecktoberfest but have likewise heard good things!

Perhaps Clawhammer from Highland in NC. I think Westbrook in SC brews a fest beer as well.

Hi-Wire Zirkusfest is another great one. Took gold a couple years back at GABF.

Without doing research I can think of
Burial Festbier Lager, Westbrook Festbrook, Edmunds Oast House Oktoberfest, and Birds Fly South Flocktoberfest.

Here in Atlanta there are three Oktorberfest style beers and I would put them in this order:

    1. Tucker Brewing Co. Tucktoberfest Marzen (if you are anywhere near Tucker, GA, they are a must see. Great lager beers and the largest beer garden in GA).
    2. New Realm Brewing The Bavarian Prince Marzen
    3. Arches Brewing Festbier

In North Carolina, I would definitely grab Old Mecklenburg Mecktoberfest Marzen and Highland Clawhammer Oktoberfest Marzen. Those are probably two of the best in the Southeast.

Here is another tip. If you are a fan of lager beers, especially dark beers like Schwarzbier, Creature Comforts Brewing just put their limited seasonal Schwarzbier The Silent World out to distribution. There may be some available when you are here. If you see it, I recommend you grad a 4 pack. It's a rare style these days and it is very well made.

    Enjoy your beer hunting! Cheers!

Excellent. If you get a chance to go to Good Word Brewing & Public House in Duluth, hit them up. They have a slow pour pilsner there that is very good.

Be sure to let us know what you picked up and what you liked. Our craft beer scene here is relatively young compared to other areas of the country, but we've got some pretty solid brewer here.

    Cheers!

Ah man, I really wish Creature Comforts distributed to TN....do their cans make it out of the state?

I'm afraid not. Only bootleg! It'd be worth the trip to the border if you're close enough.

I'm in Knoxville so it's only 90 minutes to the border. I'll convince the wife to take a road trip this month!

My two favorites out of Virginia so far have been Port City's Oktoberfest which is a medium bodied Marzen I could drink year round and Bingo Beer's Oktoberfest which is definitely a deeper Marzen that is for colder months.

I'm trying to go through as many Oktoberfests as possible, but if there's one I come back to, it'll be that one.

Depending on your route Charlotte would be a fruitful stop. The Olde Mecklenburg, Triple C and Noda versions are all outstanding this year.

Well worth it. There are probably 10-12 local versions, several of which are great.

If you're coming down I-95 to I-85 to I-40 West to I-85 South out of Greensboro, you'll pass Red Oak Brewery in Whitsett, N.C. between Burlington and Greensboro. It's right on I-40 (you can see it from the highway). It is a genuine Bavarian style brewery that's been around for decades. It is a very cool spot.
