My most controversial opinion is that I much prefer lagers to ales.

I associate drinking with refreshment and prefer the higher thirst quenching abilities of lagers. For example, after doing a work out or something physically demanding there's nothing more I enjoy than opening the fridge and guzzling a ready cooled lager as reward.

I feel I can also tell the subtle differences in different pilsners, euro pales, AALs that a lot of people may not. Also I do like darker lagers and bocks as they have a more watery feel than say stouts of IPAS.

I do however enjoy the odd high hopped IPA, Belgian Trappist ale or imperial stout but I can't drink that stuff in significant volumes.

I get what you are expressing here (and agree with you) but the way I would characterize it is that they have a drier finish to the beer; a quality that says to me "take another sip".

Have you had any Czech Dark Lagers? For my palate they are the ideal dark lager with a Goldilocks aspect and everything done just right. Needless to say this presumes the beer was brewed well.

    Cheers!

Yes well only two, Budvar Dark and Pinovaar Czech Herold Black Lager which I got in a discount store. I thought it was great. Flavoursome and moreish but have not been able to find it since.

Michael I was a BIG fan of Herold beer when I could purchase it but that was a long time ago (over 10 years I reckon). I did look for Herald beer during my two week vacation in the Czech Republic last year but I never did see this beer available for sale. Bummer! :slight_frown:

    Cheers!

I occasionally recall how I felt that $10 was too expensive for a six pack and would limit myself on how much to buy. And then I usually wind up slapping my forehead muttering "why oh why..."

Do you remember what you paid for Herald beers? It was so long ago since this beer was available for sale to me that I do not have a clue what I paid for it. I am not even sure where I was able to purchase this beer, I want to say Total Wine & More in Claymont, DE but it has been so long I am not even sure if that is true.

    Sucks getting old(er)!:grimacing:

    Cheers!

That's what I was getting at, it was either $10 or 11, but at least $3 more a sixer than most other beers.

I so wish that $10 was still an expensive 6 pack. Even the older brands that had been hanging in at 8-9$ are slowly creeping toward 9.99 out here

This is more of a pet peeve than a controversial opinion, but you know what really annoys me? When people abbreviate "with" as "w/" for beers that contain additives. It's something that I've never seen before getting into craft beer and quite frankly looks dumb as fuck and is incredibly pointless. I mean do you really need to abbreviate a word with four letters? Is it really that hard to type two more letters?

That might have more to do with the Name length here on BA.

I've seen it for plenty of beers with names that aren't that long and in notes as well, where it's completely pointless. I guess it doesn't help that some breweries use this form in their official label notes.

Well, to quote some other posters, who apparently do a lot of texting:
"R U kiddin'?" (If so, we might be related).

Both "w/" and "w/o" are pretty common abbreviations used in US English, especially in now practically-defunct applications such as newspaper Classified Want Ads, where the advertiser often had to pay per letter/space. Yeah, didn't save a lot but every nickel counted.

I think it came from shorthand (speaking of defunct...).

I think it's more of an internet/smartfone thing. It takes so many electrons to create those extra characters, don't want to squander them.

w/o for without (and, then, w/ for with) far, far, far pre-dates the internet, smartphones, texting, etc.

It dates back to the era when most things were handwritten or typeset, or (as @jesskidden says) you paid by the letter/space.

If writing (not typing or touching a screen), it truly is a time and effort saver to merely write w/o rather than without, or even w/ rather than with.

You young wippersnappers need to remember we didn't always have computers and smartphones.

America has surpassed Germany and we now brew better Oktoberfest/Marzen style beers. :astonished:

If better = hopped up, more caramel, sweeter, and with other "innovations" like using rye or being hazy, then I agree.
