For commercial brewers yeast selection is sometimes (most times?) heavily influenced by the specific equipment that exists within the brewery.

I listened to the podcast and it sounds like an issue they had with using the Augustiner lager yeast strain was collecting the yeast from the fermenters they have in their brewery so it was challenging for them to re-pitch the yeast for subsequent batches; it sounds like this strain would 'stick' to the fermenter's cone and thereby not easy to collect. It would seem that the Mexican Lager yeast strain was 'better' in this regard and therefore made their job of collecting for re-pitching for subsequent batches easier.

I personally do not re-pitch my lager yeasts in my homebrewery so this is an aspect I am not concerned about. But since I ferment in a bucket as opposed to a stainless steel CCV (Cylindroconical Vessel) I would have an easier time collecting the Augustiner yeast strain if that was part of my brewing process.

    Cheers!

A couple of years ago I did a couple of blind tastings of local Oktoberfests and German ones (split between pale and amber).

I was a little picky on the American side avoiding ones I knew were excessively caramelly.

I was surprised to find that I thought the German ones were more caramelly tasting than most of the American attempts.

No doubt, I generally agree with you and suspect that the classic breweries of Europe tend to have a much more holistic understanding of what it takes to make their most sublime beers. I think that this same holistic approach to quality is why the truly world class breweries in the US stand out above the masses.

I just had to be contrarian because my outsized 'Murica! pride was triggered when someone deigned to suggest that anyone did anything better ever *bald eagle screams, fireworks burst!* :sunglasses:

Yet I don't recall a single pale Oktoberfest in the American O'fest thread.
Hard to claim American oktoberfest superiority when American breweries don't even make the beer served at Oktoberfest.

FWIW -- I had a very local example that was in the Wiesn Fest style. And it was actually pretty good, but it still wasn't HB or Weihenstephaner.

    Here’s a few:

Beers are like dogs, there are no bad styles (breeds) just bad owners (breweries). I see people shit on pastry stouts/NEIPAs/fruited sours/smoked beers etc but really every style has amazing beers. It might not be to your “tastes” but you shouldn’t bemoan it’s existence

those of you who “hate” NEIPAs just aren’t drinking good examples. Freshness matters, the ones sitting warm on the shelf of your local store aren’t going to have that.

going off of the freshness thing. American octoberfest beers (Festbiers and martens) often times are better because they are much fresher. That’s not to say that in their best state American octoberfests are better

point #1 I tend to agree with, taste is subjective. But...I love sweets a lot, I hate sweet beers, if I want dessert I prefer actual dessert same goes for a smoothie. I’ll grab the blender instead, cheaper, healthier and better tasting.

I don’t think many of us hate on NEIPAs and we know what good beer is. I don’t think there is a single person on BA that buys warm and old, as you stated, hazy ipas. I think people hate on/dislike the culture that it has spawned not the beer itself. I’ve had plenty of good hazy ipas I just still prefer the likes of fresh squeezed, two hearted, etc.

We kind of already hit the last point too many times over today. Many opinions we’re shared on said topic.

I saw a Bald Eagle two days ago here on our lake. It was more amazing than any attempted political effort or hijack of a gorgeous and real symbol of majesty...

I mean I’m gonna have to outright disagree. I’ve had some of the highly acclaimed NEIPAs within a proper freshness window and they still don’t work for my taste preference and what kind experience I prefer out of a beer. It’s still clear that it’s a well-made beer that had care and precision put into it, but I still wouldn’t really drink them again. Maybe not even if they were given to me. Some styles just don’t work for people. Doesn’t mean they’re all poorly made beers.

You likely know this already but Ben Franklin was not an advocate for the Bald Eagle to be a ‘symbol’ for the USA.

In a letter to his daughter he wrote:

“For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.

With all this injustice, he is never in good case but like those among men who live by sharping & robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the district. …”

Maybe the Bald Eagle would be a good symbol for the folks of Congress? But I digress…

    Cheers!

Although Franklin wanting the turkey as our national bird is a myth; the same letter goes on to state:

Anthropomorphizing animals is kinda dangerous. I don't think humans stack up well compared to, say, rabbits. Congress is a different kettle of fish....
