And since you made mention of fish:

im not quite referring to you, I’m more referring to people who think the style is a stain on the craft beer scene. While obviously that isn’t a commonly held view it’s something I see a lot of here and the Reddit beer subs

Heck, everyone knows the best way to enjoy things is to shit on the different things other people enjoy.

No offense to the people that ask, but I find it slightly annoying when the -Ask me Anything- threads are filled with “When are you going to distro your beer to my state???” Inquiries.
I think an email sent to the brewery would suffice if you want to know that.

I always wonder if the same folks are saying "drink local" or complaining about overstuffed shelves in their regional forums.

But if its on my shelves then its "local" and I can drink it. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

While my view on NEIPA doesn’t lean absolutely to one side or the other, but I can understand the anti-NEIPA sentiment. It’s definitely oversaturated the market where more diversity could belong. We are missing out on a lot of potentially beautifully made traditional and undersung styles. NEIPA pays the bills and fuels the growth, though. The same thing happened with the revival of the IPA in the US in the 00s. I think those “extremists” just want more handles and shelf space for niche styles.

If you are referring to my drunken rant the other night about the impossibility of finding Narwhal locally in the WBAYDN thread sorry about that lol. It just bugs me that I can't find my favorite beer from SN anywhere near me but all their other offerings are on the shelf. For what it's worth I have contacted the brewery in the past and got a super positive response from Terrence but obviously he doesn't control distro. I should probably ask my local bottle shops to specifically request it and maybe they can get because I've seen Narwhal on the shelf exactly one time in the past 5+ years

Or Gordon’s from Oscar Blues, I love that beer, but I haven’t had one in 5 years, OB isn’t far away, but I don’t remember seeing it anywhere in Asheville either. Some of the local distro is a mystery to me.

I'd rather go to Goose Island or Blue Point and sacrifice "independence" than go to a new local brewery that has 13 NEIPA. One will be an average beer experience with a standout (maybe two), but an excellent overall experience with good food and a family-friendly atmosphere; The other will be beer made by people who aren't very good at making beer while a whole bunch of dudes take pictures of flights with their phones while discussing how many caps they should give each of their four identical tasting "hazies."

Simple, any beer referred to as a Marzen / Oktoberfest / Festbier with caramel malts, which is most of the American interpretation.

and all these beers would be failures?

By my definition yes, calling them the Marzen, Festbier or Oktoberfest is a failure. We get specific with calling an American IPA, not just an IPA. Why not call it an American Marzen? May seem semantics to some. However, to me this is a style where caramel malts are inappropriate and adding any is so core against the style that it no longer belongs being referred to as the style.

I 100% agree with your first paragraph, but that also pretty much negates the second one for me. I’ve drank the “good” examples of NE IPAs. (Tree House, Other Half, Trillium, Toppling Goliath, New Bissell Brothers...) and I can easily tell and admit they are better. Almost drinkable even. But I still hate them. I can usually consume about 6 oz of a world class NE IPA. Just not my taste.

I agree with pretty much everything you're saying, except that I don't think we need another style added to our growing list (Amber Lager fits the bill). I just wish American brewers would recognize bready melanoidin character doesn't equal caramel candy.
