I don't get the diacetyl from Abrasive.

I would consider myself objective, since I am no where near either place where they are brewed.

I've had Abrasive and Pliny, both fresh(with 10 days of bottling/canning) in the same night. To me, there was no comparing them whatsoever. Abrasive crushed it.

Maybe five years ago Pliny would have fared better, but I honestly can't say.

I am with theCoder, Abrasive is just a tad too much for me. My vote goes with Pliny, although the last few bottles I have had have not been the same. The Pliny clone a friend made was phenomenal.

Fun fact: I passed my Abrasive off to my girlfriend, who finished it like a champ!

I'm just the opposite. When I'm drinking a Double IPA I want to know it. Pliny is way too tame for me. It doesn't grab me by the $%#&* like Abrasive does.

Both are excellent, but my heart goes out to Abrasive. I just wish it was available year-round like Pliny.

Lucky! You might be less sensitive than even I am. I also haven't had this years batch either, maybe they've cleaned it up over the years.

I love both beers. I will say the biggest different is really the body. Pliny has a lighter body while Abrasive is quite full for a DIPA.

I am coming to town on Saturday....where would I find abrasive off-sale in the TC and where on tap? I'll be around Augsburg College but also traveling to east Metro after that

Being from the Midwest, Pliny is a common trade for me. Just a few weeks ago I enjoyed 12 bottles of
Pliny and a growler of it. Amazing beer. Tonight I pulled an abrasive out of the fridge and yep.... Abrasive FTW. Friday I have a case of Heady coming, so I'll have plenty to compare to!

Ive never tasted Diacetyl in any of Surlys beers, ever. I'm extremely sensitive to diacetyl.

I will say this. Neither beer is better than the other. Both are well made, world class beers. Personally I prefer Pliny. I enjoy Abrasive, but I like a drier DIPA, hence my preference for Pliny over Abrasive.

Zipps should have plenty and Republic had it on tap and might still.

Augsburg is REALLY close to Zipps. Swing through there and you should be fine. You could also check out Acadia Cafe for tap as well. Not sure if they do, but they may. It's between Augsburg and Republic (like a block or two from the Republic 7 Corners location).

Do they change the hops in Abrasive every year. I had it a few years back and didn't care for the garlic notes and thought perhaps it had summit hops in it....this year I see Citra and Warrior are the hops....maybe they always have been I was just ultra sensitive to the "garlicy" notes..Citra is one of my favorite hops but I have gotten some of that from it at times depending on how it is used .

I am looking forward to trying this years batch...
