And even fewer (unfortunately, in my opinion) understand that Marzen was a process first. Any beer, of any style, brewed before summer, to stock the supplies when brewing wasn't advisable, was called a Marzen.

Unfortunately, most people just want to drink and not dig into the history of brewing. This is the difference between the casual and the the dedicated Beer Advocate (okay, that was probably too strong -- but I still wish more BAs would get some understanding of beer before 1995 ).

Bill, I would be willing to bet that most German beer drinkers are not even aware that Märzen is a beer strength designation. I strongly suspect that only a distinct minority of folks (e.g., beer experts like Ron Pattinson and resulting some BAs) are cognizant of this aspect.

    Cheers!

I thought some German/Austrian brewers still used it that way. Has it also, pretty much, list that meaning over there too?

    Perhaps "some"?

But is suspect that most German beer drinkers are not aware of Märzen as being a beer strength designation.

You could start a poll in the Germany forum to ask this question but since the folks replying are BAs I would suggest they would not be representative of the broader German beer drinking market.

    Cheers!

Singles scare me, especially imports. I hope it's a 2020 bottling.

Shouldn't have sediment anyway, filtered and Pasteurized German lager. They'd put the brewmaster in prison.

FWIW -- I've had a stash of different German Oktoberfest beers laid down since 2015 or so. Been drinking thru them to cull the herd and not a one has had any sediment. Just sayin'.

    The flavor, however...

If the last number of the 4 digit code is a 0, then it's from this year. If it's a 9, then it's last year's.

I imagine in Austria Märzen may still mean something to people. But maybe not?

Next Oktoberfest season...so around June.

Oh, and I meant call the Oktoberfest whatever you want. Festbier, Marzen, Fest-Marzen, Oktoberfest....just don’t call it an IPA of any sort. Then I’ll break your windows.
