This, but I'd love to try them both fresh, side by side, just to see if my opinion changes.

Very popular answer, but would you have said it if it was Pliny vs. Miller High Life?

Tropical?? Not necessarily. Loads of pine and grapefruit, with a dryness at the finish due principally to the hop presence, but I wouldn't describe it as tropical. In fact, the whole reason I began this thread was because I note so many similarities among the two. I wanted to see what others' opinions were.

Dryness doesnt have much to do with hops. It is usually due to a high mineral presence in the water.

You guys are right, "dry" does have it's own meaning when referring to the flavor and mouthfeel of wine, spirits, and beer. Attenuation also refers to a specific component of brewing beer that has nothing to do with hops, so it doesn't describe what it is that I was trying to convey either. What I meant was instead of having a wet or juicy nature like in Hopslam, beers like Abrasive and PtE have a mouthfeel much less juicy toward the finish. The hop character tends to create a coating, of sorts, but does not cause hop burn. Which can often be noted in aggressively hopped ales.

I'm voting, even though the Pacific forum isn't my "home" forum... because there still isn't a separate Pacific NW region as far as beer listings go.

While it should have no bearing on how you "tip your hand," and while I can't imagine that anyone actually cares which beer you ultimately prefer... for me it's Pliny, no contest. I also don't think they're all that similar.

And as for why the Midwesterners are outdoing the West Coast in numbers and conviction on this topic, it's because the Midwest is chock-full of homers who still believe there's something to prove.

    Cheers!

...because Pliny is king, regardless of all the shit ppl talk (somehow its become cool to talk shit about Pliny cuz its soooo 5 years ago man)....i don't see any threads called "I found my abrasive killer" or "I found my heady Killer"...the fact that everyone is somehow trying to dethrone Pliny in some sort of imaginary round robin of DIPAs has to say something about Pliny. With that said i would take any of those beers gladly, they are all amazing examples of the style. I live in so.cal so i drink more pliny, but if all three were available to me they would all be in my regular rotation.

I'll add this as someone from the Midwest. I've had Abrasive on tap and didn't think the beer lived up to the hype, though I can see why others rave about it. It's a hop bomb no doubt. I enjoy hops but not to the extent that they are in that beer. Furious on the other hand is about as I have had in an IPA. Now someone tell me how I can get these Russian River beers in my hands.

I'm over both. I don't waste my time on trading for IPAs and Pliny is not as good as it was after expansion(at least for bottles). It will be the same for abrasive at surly. I'm sticking to homebrew and local breweries which I can get fresh. BTW, I go to SD once a month for the fresh stuff.

I'm sure Pliny is great but I don't have any real interest in that. The RR barrel aged beers, specifically Consecration or Supplication are what I'm after. Sorry to hi-jack the thread. I have no doubt Pliny is great but between Hopslam and Abrasive what little DIPA I purchase those two satisfy.

This is not an answer, but more like a statement of the obvious.

You're kind of a douche. And a whiny one at that. Get out of your feelings and enjoy some semblance of a conversation (not a debate) about beer. It's fun. You're probably drunk. In which case, you're forgiven. But, try to reel in your douchiness next time.

True. As life goes, if you have frequent access to those two boys, I wouldn't miss PtE either. For that matter, I wouldn't even miss PtY. But, PtE is a magnificent beer to those who have tried it, drink it regularly, and know what it offers. I love it. I'll always regard it one of the best DIPAs I've ever had. In fact, I can't say it wasn't the first DIPA I ever had. Come to think of it, it was either something from Three Floyds (without peeking, I think Arctic Panzer Wolf is a DIPA) or Hopslam. But, I digress. Abrasive is phenomenal. I note a ton of similarity between Abrasive and PtE, which is the reason for the thread. I dig how the convo has unraveled so far. Except, of course, for the weak who report, "Why even compare, just drink what you like." I wish those folks weren't bullied in high school.

I understand your wanting to gather opinions about which beer people prefer, out of pure curiosity. What I don't get is how you apparently want to rely on other peoples' opinions to form your own. "Pliny the Elder or Abrasive--which is better?" is clearly debate material. Think about it.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go look for three paragraphs you've ever written upon which I can surmise a broad generalization of your character. Cheers.
