Pliny the Younger 2021: case predictions & wish list

    Hi folks,

    The big news today is—no surprise—that Russian River’s 2021 Pliny the Younger brewpub release has been cancelled due to, what else, COVID. But, the silver lining is that RR will be selling mixed cases of beer for shipping. (CA only.)

    Cases will have 4 bottles of PtY, and 2 each of other RR beers. No price or other details have been announced yet—which means it’s a good time to make some (completely baseless) predictions and speculations, and draw up some wish lists as well.

    So, what do you expect to see in the PtY case? What’s in YOUR dream PtY case from RR? How long until it sells out? And how much do you think this will end up setting you back?

    Here’s my expectation:

    4 PtY + 2 PtE—of course—plus an assortment of regulars from both sides of the board. I’m going with

    2 Pig
    2 STS Pils
    2 Mind Circus
    2 Tempo Change
    2 Velvet Glow
    2 Dribble Belt
    2 Damnation
    2 Sanctification
    2 Supplication

    although my better guess is the actual case will lean heavily on the left side, and we won’t see anything that isn’t already being bottled/canned and readily available. Since I think PtY went for $10 a bottle last year, I’m guessing this will easily be in the $180-200 price range.

    Wish list: PtE, Pig, HOPFATHER, Stivo, Jake Break, Brux, Row 2, Shadow of a Doubt, Hop 2 It, Procrastination. And maybe a Pliny for President post-inauguration variant. Dream big!

    I doubt they will put any of the 375s in the mixed pack just for simplicity’s sake.

    Assume it will be a case of 12 bottles like their other bottle packs and not 24.

    I'd like 4 PtY, 2 PtE, 2 Blind Pig, 2 Happy Hops and 2 Row 2 Hill 56.

    Completely agree; this was my guess for a lineup and one I’d be quite happy with. Obviously, depends on what they brew in the January time frame. I could see Mind Circus being one of the 4 non-PtY options as well.

    It would be nice if they put Velvet Glow in there just to force diehard hopheads to drink an amazingly underrated lager.

    How are these packed by the way for those of you who have gotten RR delivered?
    I was thinking about ordering some RR and shipping to a non BA buddy to then ship to me in Michigan. But if he has to re-pack to safely ship ground to MI, I may re-think my plan.

    I personally haven't tried a better Helles-style beer in the US. When I swing by RR these days (rarely), that's pretty much the beer I take back.

    This pack would make me happy. Happy Hops is probably their most underrrated ipa and Row 2 is one of the best pales around. The rest are essential.

    This is a minority opinion, I'm sure, but I'd love to see a rebrew of Apical Dominance included.

    Since they've been selling (12) bottle cases for months now, pretty obvious this will be similar. Going to guess it looks like the below because they like to include non-hoppy beers in the mixed cases.

    (4) PtY
    (2) PtE
    (2) Pig
    (2) Happy Hops
    (2) STS Pils

    Last case of PtE that I had shipped was packed as 3 layers of 4 bottles (or 4 layers of 3?) cradled on their side, with a cardboard-ish waffle between each layer, forming the base for the next layer above.

    I'm sure there's some actual term for what I'm describing but it's obvious when you see it.

    I think it’s called a 3x4 chocolate waffle cardboard upside down surprise. Not sure though.

    This makes a lot of sense. One can always add more beers onto the shipment, cause 1 bottle of R2H56 isn't nearly enough for this BA!

    I'm guessing, in addition to the 4x pte and 2x Pty there will be,

    2x r2h56
    2x STS or maybe Stivo
    2x a hazy ipa

    Has Stivo been packaged before? I've only ever seen it on draft.

    I don't think so, I threw that maybe in there because the language seems to imply there will be something out of the ordinary or never before packaged. I don't know though, I'm also torn on whether they'll go all hoppy or if they will throw a couple dark beers in there to balance it.

    Obviously my gut went with all hoppy
