Saw that collab. Looked very intriguing. Looking forward to revisiting singlecut for their hops and lagers. Since I’ll be living in queens it’s a more convenient spot for me the Brooklyn extravaganza. Used to be one of my favorite spots to meet up with friends when I came to NY. Their taproom is chill and the beer is great. I did like some of their early IPAs. Specifically does anyone remember laughter. I liked how that one leaned not into the full murky haze but somewhere in the middle. I had some extreme variance with their IPAs over the years, though, which is always a factor that drives me away towards a more consistent producer. For example, has some atrocious batches of Bon Bon and I don’t think it’s ever been the same. When they moved away from some of the OG core brands and started this new line of hoppy beers I kind of lost track of them. Around that time grimm was kicking off and finback was hitting a new stride. Say all of that to say I’m ready to give them another chance and really doubt I’ll be disappointed.

One last comment. Not sure what’s up with singlecut’s distro. Is it just me or do some of the local NYC shops not even get all the stuff they distribute elsewhere. Seems like they are leaning heavily into the more northern market as well as some random other areas.

SC definitely went through a rough patch with consistency (as did Grimm and Finback, FWIW) but I live real close to SC North and visited often before covid and was never once disappointed by anything I had there. Often, though, I was extremely impressed.

Looking through my untapped I thought the highest of Psychadelic, DDH Green Plastic Watering Can, DDH Full-stack, and Jacknifed Juggernaut.

The last, in particular, I do remember was goddamn stellar and one of my favorite IPAs last year.

true. Basically every brewery has been through a rough patch. A number of favors contribute I think, but a main one is expansion/up-scaling. Another one is change in brewers (i.e. LIC beer project). They were really next level at one point and I don’t think they’ve ever been the same. Something I think could attribute the the root+branch guy leaving if you put 2 and 2 together. They are another one tho, in addition to singlecut, I plan to give another shot once I move to queens.

This thread has strayed far away from lagers.. so uhhh.. to stay topical.. I’d really like to see breweries do a rotating series of a single dry hopped pils/pale lager. Would be interesting to see how some of the more hype hops like Nelson as simcoe play as a feature point.

One of my real local locals (27A Brewing) did a hoppy pilsner hopped primarily with Nelson (I can’t remember if it was exclusively single hopped, I think it was) and I have to admit, I was a fan of it. It was also 6.2% which was surprising. Not traditional by any stretch of the imagination but I enjoyed it.

I’m quoting you again. The rustic lager is amazing. It actually reminds me of IA Summer Landscapes. Must be the spelt.

Not all that many Schwarzes out there. Brooklyn Winter Lager is a great, widely available choice.

Just came here to bring up Haus Pils. You are correct, the recipe changed between batch #1 and #2 but they are in the process of dialing it in and I believe will be sticking with #2. It really is incredible.

What has been your favorite “craft American lager” you’ve had available in the area? Those ones that come on at a lower price range and are meant to rival the macro lagers.

so far I’ve had the founders solid gold, which I quite like. I’ve bought two 24 packs over the past couple months. Very good for about $1 per can price. Stored cold at my local grocery store.

Have also had bingo lager out of Richmond VA, a new lager focused brewery. 6-pack of 16oz cans for $13 was a steal and it was damn good.

I am very intrigued by Grimm lite. Have seen great reviews and I’m sure they kill it. Will definitely be grabbing some when I get to NY.

Some others I’ve seen pop up on beer karmas Instagram:

Victory classic: they kill classic German styles and sure this is super solid and coming in at a nice price point. Will buy it next chance I get.

night shift nite lite: Based on reviews seems to just deliver on what it says it is. Looks very pale. Will try this one if the price is right.

Jacks Abby house lager: not sure if this comes in at the same low price. But they have it in 15 pack of 12oz.

One more that I don’t think hits NY but I’m itching to try is modern gulpie from tired hands. They are one of my top 3 favorite breweries.

I know it’s not available in our area but The Cabin and The Cottage by Fox Farm are just stupid good. I do love JA House Lager too and Von Trapp’s Helles Lager is great and very affordable. Folksbier OBL is fantastic too. The Augustiner Helles and their light lager are both favorites and Paulaner Munchen Lager is great too.

Sly Fox Helles is my #1. And it's a real crowd pleaser, everyone I give it to seems to love it as well.

I just had Evil Twin's new multi-grain lager, and it's pretty damn great. Full flavored but not overhopped or muddled like some of the ones I've had from Other Half. I will definitely venture more into the lagers in the future.

Yeah, I find that one great to drink right after a stout or something hoppy. It just tastes so clean and beautiful in contrast.

If I’m not mistaken. Folksbier OBL is priced more in line with higher priced lagers in NYC ($14-18 per 4-pack). Theirs might be a little less but considering it’s 12oz cans it’s about the same per ounce. If OBL was $12 for a six pack that would put it in that category.

Wasn’t trying to infer self-distribution, just ongoing growth and more product to “quality control” (e.g. new brewery)

Folksbier OBL (it costs $11.94 at the brewery)

Von Trapp lagers when they make it here (the pils is damn incredible), which I’ve noticed is every 2-3 months or so (at least on Long Island)

JA Red Tape (red lager) is incredible. I mean lets be honest - most JA lagers are top notch.

The best deal in lager there is, I’m not sure this fits the parameters since it’s a black lager, is Kostritzer. I mean, a 4-pack of 16.9oz cans is like $6-$8. It’s a great beer and the price point is insane.

JA House Lager and Smoke and Dagger are usually $10 for a 6-pack of pints. The Paulaner lager 16.9 4-pack cans were $9. If we’re talking Pilsner, you can get Bitburger, Krombacher, Veltins, Benedicktiner, etc all cheap. I had a Best Market (rip) next to me that had the Bitburger and Veltins all the time for $6 a 4-pack. I have a distro next to me that had Krombacher 6-pack tall boys for $9. It’s hard to beat that.
