I've never heard of this competition, but the header of their own list of the competition results says they are one of the top 3 competitions in the U.S.

Are any of your local breweries listed as a winner? If you've had the opportunity to drink the beer do you agree that it deserves the award?

One of my local breweries, Territorial Brewing, took the bronze medal for their Gose called Gose like Swayze. It's a good one and deserving of recognition.

That is a lot of obscure brewers. Not a single MD Brewer from my home state, and the ones from neighboring states where I frequently buy beers and states I’ve traveled to and done a lot of beer shopping in, never heard of any of them.

Lots of Cincinnati area breweries took part and had success at the competition.

    Never heard of the event.
    Didnt see any CT breweries.
Some of the categories seem odd:
    Hazy Strong Pale Ale
    New England Style IPA
These would seem to be almost the same beer based on name alone.

Might try to check out the winners for a style I like.

In a nutshell: if you see any winning breweries from the state you live in then it's a valid competition.

I thought that this competition was a combination of commercial and home brewers (hence the "open" moniker). Never paid any attention to it though

Second tier competition. Pay to enter. Trying to find info on who runs it and who the judges are is hard to come by. Maybe someone else can comment on that. GABF and WBC are held in much higher esteem than this. Cheers.

All comments that seem to indicate that this is a third rate competition. Maybe especially so if many Cincinnati breweries took a medal since Oxford, OH, is close by. Major competitions always seem to be located in major markets. (I wonder if Miami University has a brewing program as the reason for the location.)

Are there any beer competitions that are NOT pay to enter?

Not that I am aware of
But all that I know of are transparent in who is putting it on and where the money goes to. For GABF and to an extent WBC it goes to the Brewers Association to help fund not only the judging and actual festival/competition, it goes to the general fund of the BA to support its members through out the year.
I believe this competition is for profit but again I do not give it much credence and have not fully explored these questions. Cheers.

You are correct here, below is from the linked discussion:

“This competition is the only one to include beers from professional breweries and beers from gold medal winners from the National AHA Homebrew Competition.”

    Cheers!

I’m gonna have to disagree with the OP. There are MANY big-time brewers with national name recognition listed among the winners.

I don't think I said that, unless you are considering my 'third rate' comment as a small brewery-only competition. I've noticed some big-time breweries in the list.

I like the split-up in styles of the NA category. Several I nodded at, like Paradiso Citra IPA by Big Drop and Bitburger Drive.

This competition doesn’t seem to be very legit. But my go to local brewery for German beer, New Oberpfaltz, won gold for Munchner Helles and they make a damn good one. Is it the best in the U.S.? Nope, but still nice to see them get some recognition legit or not.

That brewery is on my list to visit when traveling is safer for my health. I'll probably try them all.
