Oh I agree, however without a brewpub they might have to send the beer to distro and purchase it back in order to serve it on draft it which would cut into their profits during the fest.

I don't know all the Indiana laws around this though.

Indiana’s Alcohol & Tobacco Commission has a website that allows for license lookups and is fairly informative on some of the speculation in this thread.

    A) They appear to host the festival under a Temporary Beer Permit. The requirements for servers (anyone handling beer needs an employee license) and other regulations (e.g. carry-in limits, prohibitions on wine/spirits) are listed on the form. Regardless of the status of the Brewpub, it's Three Floyds Brewing, LLC that obtains the alcohol-related permit for DLD. Y’all are on your own for info on the food/coffee permits, though.

    B) I would think that the hotels, restaurants, gas stations, etc. in the area might object to denying a DLD temporary permit out of spite over the brewpub closure.

    C) I’m sure that the loss of restaurant tax revenue hurts but given Three Floyds’ growth (which fuels higher property/excise/sales/capital improvement taxes), I would guess that the town of Munster doesn’t want to alienate them.

It looks like the brewpub entity holds the license that allows for to-go/carryout beer sales but it’s in the process of being transferred to Three Floyds Brewing, LLC. Interestingly, they don’t appear to hold a retailer license but off-premise sales are grandfathered into their restaurant license.

No ones mentioned they fact that as a beer destination, it was a really weird set-up. You couldn’t just go the the building and order a beer and hang out. It was frustrating to maybe want to have a one or two beers, only to be told there’s an hour wait to sit at a table.

You had to have a seat, either at the bar or a table. For the business, that really limits the amount of income you could make at any one time.

I would guess you’ll see a taproom type situation that’s paired down to not have food, but also allow people to mingle like a normal bar.

They did serve beer to you while you were waiting for a table outside. Not sure if it was the full tap list or not because a lot of times it came out in cans (if I recall correctly). Could of theoretically got on the waitlist, stayed for a couple beers, and left if you were sick of waiting.

You also have to think of the era they were built. Late 90’s/early aughts didn’t have that many of the brewery layouts we think of today (or at least not in the area). I have no proof, but I feel like the restaurant portion was more needed for a brewery back then as opposed to today.

That outdoor serving area was a pretty recent addition though. I think it was added in 2018. So roughly 2 out of the ~15 years or so the brewpub was open.

Gotcha...I forgot when they put it up. Could have been the village holding them up on that. Look how long it took for Naperville to allow Solemn Oath/2 Fool’s to have outdoor patios (or more than three drinks a day)

With all of the development that is taking place in and around Centennial Park in Munster (just west of FFF) it would not surprise me if a new taproom opened within the next 1-2 years in that area.

The fact that we are this late in 2020 and no one has started a Dark Lord Day 2021 thread yet is all you need to know about this.

I don't know about the rest of you, but if they ever hold another DLD I'll probably die at it. You'd think it'd be the other way around, but my alcohol tolerance has dramatically dipped during these 9 pandemic months, and I don't ever see it building back up quite to where it was before.

Sabtos passed away quietly after passing out and losing consciousness in a Munster, Indiana industrial park during 3 Floyds annual Dark Lord Day festival. He is another in a long line of post-pandemic casualties from an atrophied liver which was dramatically out of shape for a beer festival. His family is asking the public for the safe return of his variant in this sad time as his allotment was last seen being carried off by a tatted-up neckbeard with a Gun Craft Brewing snifter and offering up samples of his latest home brew Dark Lord clone.

Well that's an unusual extension of the noise issue typically found in taprooms. Do they hand out ear plugs?
