The trends toward high alcohol and limited release reduce options. Sounds like a mix of Harpoon IPA 6% and Harpoon Rec. League 4% could work, as long as Rec. League stays available. I like to have British style pale ales as a standard, myself, and have to scramble to find a good available product (I prefer Montauk Driftwood when available).

If you were here I’d recommend Westbrook One Claw, it’s a Rye based PA, but it’s an ipa no matter that they call it. Imo it’s the best hoppy beer they make imo. I know they distro elsewhere I’m not sure. As mentioned above Dales PA is everywhere and usually quite fresh.

Not sure if you can get it in RI, or how close you are to MA, but Fresh Pick by Fort Hill is a fantastic 7% NEIPA option for a stupidly reasonable price (typically 10-11 bucks for a 6 pack).

Otherwise, yeah, Sloop Juice Bomb is a great option.

I will second... and third.... that motion. If it isn't the alcohol, it is the calories. I haven't been 30 in decades and I don't burn calories like I used to, so please let's not have all the youngsters reply about how they can pound 4 or 5 x 16 oz nightly and never gain a pound, and therefore the answer is all 22 oz bombers instead of measly 16 oz cans. My subset of this BA world includes people who focus on quality and not volume. 12 oz of something very nice works just fine for one nite for me.

Yeah as @jonphisher mentioned, industrial arts wrench is 7 percent but it's now available in 12oz cans (I believe it's packaged at two roads, so should be in RI?). Pseudo sue just started in twelves and is a case of one foot in the west coast pale, one in NE vs wrench being a full on single NEIPA. I'd argue unless there's something local, that's the best two semi-nationally available, from what you're asking about (NE/IPA).

All good feedback and suggestions! I'll start prowling my local stores.

I appreciate the suggestion of mixing in low ABV selections with higher ones, but it comes down the fact that most evenings I'll have only one beer. So it better be a good one and not too high an ABV.

And flexibility is a must. Like right now, I'm enjoying a Wachusett Wally, a very nice NEIPA, 7%. I just won't sleep as well tonight (cuz it's New Year's Eve, and I'll have more than one). And exercises like this help broaden my horizons. One find was Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout, a really smooth, well-flavored beer that I otherwise would not have tried.

    Keep it coming!

Wanted to add, anything by Marlowe pretty much is on point. They've made milds and bitters and pilsners certainly, and very well at that, but their primary beer is eager to share, a 5.4 percent NE pale that while 16oz, I think does not totally go against your understandable avoidance of higher ABVs for sleep/health concerns. they are made at 12 percent brewing.

Just to add another layer of complexity, I have not yet acquired a taste for lambics, sours or wild ales. That knocks a lot of the under-7 candidates out of the running. I suppose I'll have to work on that part of my game, if I continue with this whole lower-ABV thing.

There must be a dissenter to this, I reckon that I will be the one. I find 6packs to "try" my patience for drinking the same beer 6 times. I am loyal to no single style and love to switch things up. 4 packs are quicker to get "rid" of....

I think in some cases it ends up being a moot point. For example, G-Bot, which is in 4-packs of 12-ounce cans, sells for about $13.99 near me. That works out to about 29 cents per ounce. If you get a 4-pack of 16-ounce cans of another beer in the 8% range at say, $18, that works out to about 28 cents per ounce. So I think the 16-ounce format, in some cases, has already increased prices in the 12-ounce format.

Totally get that perspective. That's why I have 3 different beers in the fridge right now: the Finback Glimmering I was given as a gift (pint cans, abv 10), the Wachusett Wally (12 Oz, abv 7) and the Smuttynose Robust Porter (12 Oz, abv 6.2). I can mix it up a little bit, per my tastes and the situation.

I wish RR Blind Pig came in 12 ounce cans so I could recommend that tasty WCIPA that weighs in at 6.2 ABV with plenty of snap and flavor.

What is the highest price per ounce you have paid for the six-pack/12 ounce format?

I suspect you already know this but buying four-packs/12 ounce is not the way to go here.

    Cheers!

Sadly if it ever does see cans it'll likely be in 4x16oz format like they've done for R2H56, Mind Circus, Citra Flash Mob, etc.

Oh, that's news that they are canning anything. I assume that one can get it at the online store. Who knows maybe someday cans will appear at my grocery. It already has about 10 RR products and regularly has cases of Pliny.
