this is a step in the right direction for a brewery that has been losing my business for quite some time. With the exception of Arrogant Bastard, I haven't purchased a Stone product in at least a year...

But at least since IRS was discontinued there have been several iterations of the similar Totalitarian.

Not so much for Old Guardian and Double Bastard, those would be next on my wish-list.

That was my thought when I read "Number 1, all-time, most-requested BRING IT BACK"; how is that NOT IRS????

This would be Flying Dog's Gonzo and the now defunct Cigar City's José Martí. There might be others, but those are the ones that come to mind now.

But Gonzo is just an Imperial Porter with higher IBU; it doesn't have the over-the-top citrus, tropical and/or pine notes. Haven't had Jose Marti but like Cigar City

Because there are hundreds of easily available imperial stouts and so few black IPAs.

    Y'all didn't specify hop varieties.
    Kool, though!

The only 1 I can get is Aecht Schlenkerla. It's amazing, but at $8 a bottle, I can't justify it all that often

Yeah I should have also said that I’m a huge SSR fan and am stoked to see this, and your point above is completely valid and true.

At the same time, I miss Stone IRS and the variants quite a bit.

I go the other way, I’m off Stone except a simple fresh Stone IPA which can be stellar. Has to be fresh though.

Good to see them bringing back one of their beers that I loved. IMO 0ne of the best Black IPAs back when they were a thing. Only decent beers left in their lineup are Arrogant Bastard and their IPA. Now if they can bring back their RIS, Lukcy Bastard, Cali-Belgique, Smoked Porter...

    Interesting.

While I love it fresh, def. a fruity, citrusy touch with some pine/resin, it’s uber hopped at 90 IBU. I find it even more delightful at about a month. More fruit and a bit fuller mouthfeel from all those hops blending in.

Exactly why I like my stouts on the hoppy side as well.

    Cheers

More brown than black is my all time favorite black ipa.

Wolavers had a really nice one too.

    Enjoy

I associate stone with breweries like Sierra Nevada and Firestone but stones prices are significantly more. Seems like everything from core beers, special releases and even barrel aged beers they are closer to more local smaller breweries than large regional breweries

It’s the only black ipa that has those characteristics, at least the few I’ve had so far. The worst examples are hideous.

That's fucking highway robbery, they are like 1.25€ in Germany... :astonished:

Ya schlenkerla is super taxed in the US. When B United canned them I saw the fresh cans for 6$ a piece. The bottles are usually $8

I seriously have to wonder if this is all tax. Seems more like naked, disgusting profiteering to me. Why would Schlenkerla be taxed any heavier than other German beer?

Also, on topic, I really hope that SSR makes it to Germany, I absolutely adore Black IPAs and would love to try it. I've been seeing a lot of Stone beers around lately, so fingers crossed.
