Now all others just dont quite taste as good as they may be...nothing else seems to live up to them. Anyone else in a slump after having some amazing brews?
I've only been fortunate enough to try two of their brews, WWBB and Surrette Riserva...WWBB was interesting, but nothing I would call mind blowing...Riserva was damn good and would love to revisit....Neither ruined my taste for other beers though...I've been trying to trade for Batch #1, but can't seem to make it happen...oh well, on with the pursuit!
I put them in different categories anyway. "Sour" is too broad of a term. Cantillon and 3F make great lambics and are two of my favorite breweries, and Crooked Stave makes great wild ales. I love them both and when I'm drinking one, I don't even really compare it to the other.
Crooked Stave beers are kinda interesting and Chad is a fantastic guy but of the handful of beers I tried I didn't find any of them to be mind blowing. However, there are many I have not tried and I know he's fairly early into the process of exploring brett beers to the dimensions he has the knowledge to do. So I would be happy to try more CS beers. I've only had some of the brett beers -- but none of the sours -- and it would not be appropriate to compare his brett beers against sour beers. Just not the same kind of beers.
I will and need to have more CS brews, but of the half dozen or so I've had... the WWBI and L'Brett D'Or are my favs thus far.
I'm not a huge sour/wild ale fan. Even I can tell Crooked Stave is doing it right. As far as the point of the thread, Two Brothers Cane & Ebel ruined me for Rye Ales. Nothing comes close.
I felt this way after FoBAB, Woodshop here in LA, and a few epic tastings with fellow BAs. It's hard to go back to the regular stuff after a daylong barrel-aged and sour drinkapalooza.
While I agree the RR regular lineup is good, CS puts out better beers for cheaper. While I associate all RR beers as the same price as Supplication, at $11 a 375ml, Crooked Stave is amazing. Plus, if you go to the brewery, you get a wide selection for a good price.
Fine... If I moved from Colorado, it would likely be to Northern California, so you don't have a bad bias by any means.
I am totally ruined after ANY FFF's, Heady Topper, HeadHunter, Maine Lunch......sigh...why is it always a brew I can't get easily???!! However, I am quite pleased with a lot of my local NJ brews including Flying Fish (Exit 16) and Kane Brewing..... God bless them :-)
I guess you didnt have the batch of Supplication I got. Although you're still right about Crooked Stave
Batch # 1 and Oculus are fantastic. The WWB beers I have tried (Rouge, Orange, Yellow, Green) haven't been as good in my opinion.
nightmare on brett did it for me... im into sours/brett now...because of this brew. ive always liked them (brett), but cs is really pushing the extremes
Blackberry Petite Sour was not very sour, but it smelled and tasted moderately tart and of blackberries. Not worth what I had to give up for it, but for a wild ale, it was very good.
Sours are my favorite style and Consecration was my favorite...till I had a Sentience the other day. That thing was mind blowing. Ran to Crooked Stave's barrel room the next day to pick up a couple more bottles. WWBI was also amazing. I'm sadden by the fact that I only got one bottle of that. And I still have an Oculus and WWBB I need to open up. I have really high hopes for the Oculus, not so much for the WWBB tho
Yeah WWBB isn't a sour, so if that's what you're into, you probably won't enjoy it as much as the others. Still a great beer though.
I know, I don't know why people can't understand that. The whole WWB series is just a bunch of different beers with Brett. They weren't mindblowing beers, but the few I had were decent and I really liked the concept they were going for.
