Why do all breweries (at least in the Chicagoland area) sell barrels for cash instead of adding them to online sales? The typical post is a story on Instagram for recently dumped barrels for CASH only at $50.

I’ve always found this to be a peculiar way for breweries to sell used barrels. The only reason I can think of for cash only is that it forces a buyer to come in and pickup the barrel immediately.

If you know the real reason or work at a brewery, please share your insight.

Most breweries are licensed for retail sales of beer, not equipment. That's my guess.

Maybe an in-person cash sale eliminates the possibility of the buyer asking them to ship, which I'm assuming they don't want to do.

Maybe they sell them for cash so they don’t have to report it on their taxes.

    Have you asked the breweries?

(Yeah, that sounds snarky but they'd have the answer).

I worked at a brewery that sold used barrels and it's definitely because we didn't want to hold them for people. We would take CC's too, but only of you were in person.

this sounds like the most logical reason to me due to the size of the barrels. Especially when you consider that barrels are typically sold in the 5-10 range when dumped and posted online. That can take up a good amount of room for a little brewery
