Not sure if just a typo but the brewery involved here is Wayfinder not Wayside

doesn’t bissell brothers do this? They use a lager yeast warm to give the beer more character. I remember listening to a podcast and talking about the recipe for substance ipa.

That made me think of Wayside West, which is just the sort of random reference that only a few people here might get. (Not that I ever went there, but I can’t believe how long that place stayed open....)

    Eh. It's an IPL.

And "Cold IPA" is the stupidest name for a "style" I've ever heard. A cold IPA is an IPA that's been kept in the fridge.

Finally had this collab yesterday. Tastes fantastic, and doesn't taste like an IPL. Tastes like a hazy/juicy IPA, just a lil cleaner. Great beer and a great price (Costco).

Drank one tonight. It was cloudier than I thought it would be, and maybe that hop blend (Talus and Pacific Sunshine) wasn't my jam. It's solid and enjoyable, but I don't know that I want the world filled with them.

It really sounds like a steam ipa

Is the only difference between a regular New England IPA and this "cold IPA" is that it's a little cleaner?

If so, doesn't really seem worth a whole new style category.

The cold IPA in the article is more like an IPL fermented at warmer than typical temps for the lager yeast. I still haven't seen any indication that the beer is lagered. That's why I've been calling it a steam ipa

Ah gotcha, thanks for the explanation.

That being said, I'm still a bit lost on any advantage regarding taste...bringing me to ask, what's the point?

HUGE caveat here, I'm asking because I haven't had it yet. Maybe it'll blow my mind, who knows?

From the article posted up thread it sounds like the goal was basically a better IPL. Sounds like these brewers attempt to hit that holy grail of a beer that combines the full and balanced flavors of a good IPA with the light, crisp body of a nice pale lager. Reports seem to confirm that they achieved this goal better than many other attempts.
