The Rangers are my primary team, but I also have a strong interest in the Sharks, and I end up watching them far more than the Rangers due to scheduling. Between the two of them, watching hockey this season has been trying, shall we say.

64... Hopefully the Sharks won't be terrible. Or have one of those 13 goal games like last weekend.

I just picked up some fantastic beer at my "local" (some of which may make it into this upcoming round's box; we'll see), which means that I can move right along to another beer from
@JayORear 's strike. And since it's Friday, there's no reason to hold back, right?

This is Plane Over Car Over Train Over Boat, a "quadruple" IPA from Trillum. (As an aside, I have absolutely no problem with brewers describing their IPAs as triple or quadruple. The distinction is perfectly acceptable among Belgian beer styles, and is anyone really going to try to make the point that a 7.7% ABV Imperial IPA has more in common with a 13% ABV Imperial IPA than it does with a 7.1% "regular" IPA? Because: no. No.)

Once you ratchet the ABV of an IPA above 10%, you start to run into problems. A syrupy mouthfeel is one of them, although that seems to be mostly a problem of the past. Another is the huge malt bill, which along with the alcohol sting can really overwhelm the hops. DFH 120 Minute IPA embraces that, and while it's crazy hoppy and bitter, I never get the impression that it's trying to make the hops really shine in the way they normally should for an IPA.

This beer isn't syrupy, but mouthfeel is still a factor. Realistically, you're drinking a beer that has a near-stout thickness, boldly proclaiming its hoppiness and "bigness," but you're trying to focus on bright and fruity hop tones. That contrast is difficult to manage, and while Trillium didn't totally fall flat on this, I also don't feel they managed it perfectly.

The latter problem is more significant. The nose is clearly hoppy, but almost in a vague, melange-like sense; the big doughy malt bill doesn't overwhelm the hops, but it makes them hard to really pick apart.

That translates to the palate, as well, although you can definitely start getting more definition to the fruity notes. Not nearly as much alcohol bite as this same beer probably would have had 10, maybe even 5 years ago.

So ... wait, is it good? That's all fairly critical, but is it good???

Well, yeah. Yeah, it is! :grinning:

It's very impressive for the ABV; they set a goal that was a serious hurdle to clear, and they managed it.

Viewed outside of that window, judged on its own merits, it's still very, very good - but not quite exceptional. I will enjoy every single sip, but I've had Trillium IIPAs that much more immediately grabbed my attention, their excellence immediately and definitively established.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30654/398150/?ba=Roguer#review
    3.92 / -9.9%

And to that point, this is my first Trillium beer ever rated below 4.0 (out of only about a dozen). And it still came damn close.

    Thanks, Jay!

Again, I'm right there with you. The only hazies over 10% that I think have really reached "exceptional" status, including mouthfeel and clear, differentiated taste, are Tired Hands Daily Personal Best and Trillium's The Streets. It makes me wonder about the difference between clear and hazy on this point, because I can think of numerous clear 10%+ IIPAs that are pretty damn great: PtY, Simtra, Beachwood Hops of Fury, etc. Anyway, a pleasant enough beer, but I really want you to try Yakima Valley . . .

    There’s 12 games. If they’re all 1-1 games that’s only 24.

I was thinking conservatively 4-3 kinda games. So 7x 12 kinda deal.

So out of curiosity: I know @2beerdogs and @ovaltine haven't yet had South Dakota beers, who else hasn't gotten that state, or North Dakota?
You can add Iowa to said list.

    Just wondering for science.

Ah yeah, if Drekker is ND, I've had it. But nothing I can think of from SD.

Yeah, but it’s getting harder not to “Price is Right” somebody so I would rather not win if I thought I might. Mox nix, it’s all good. There will be others where @WunderLlama doesn’t steal my guess.:stuck_out_tongue:
