Did you ever make it over to the old Rose and Raindrop pub on SE Grand Avenue? Outside of the Horse Brass, it was the only place I would ever see a number of cask beers available on a regular basis. I think Don Younger had some involvement with the place (I used to see him over there all the time), which in hindsight probably explains the reason behind all the cask beer.

They had HOTD stuff on cask so often, I just took it for granted that it must be easy to find cask HOTD all over PDX. Of course once they went toes up, I never saw any HOTD beer on cask ever again.

It was right on my way home from 2004 to 2007, and any time there was a hint of bad traffic, I'd say screw it and head over to the R&R until it had clamed down a bit. :sunglasses:

They always had a pretty outstanding taplist, and if you could afford it, one hell of a bourbon selection as well. I think it was the first place I ever tasted Pappy van Winkle bourbon (at the recommendation of the bartender - I'd never heard of it. LOL!!!).

Last night's haul from Arch Bridge includes a growlers of Varietal Twine Climber which I just opened for the hockey game, and Forklift IIPA, and cans of Reuben's Bitsier & Bobsier and Blimey That's Bitter!, Stoup Tent-O-Rama, GoW Built For Speed, Breakside/Brothers Cascadia Tri-Clamp, and two non-NW cans of Radiant Term of Art and Fieldworks NoHo Dank.

The Rose and Raindrop was gone long before I ever heard about it, but Mrs. vurt had visited the place a few times.

It sounds like it was a great place.

oh man. i'd not thought about that place in forever. I would occasionally frequent that place when I worked a block up the street for about a year. always solid.

    Agreed.

@derftron's comment about Bailey's (I feel the same way) made me think about the R&R again. I used to stop by fairly frequently back in the day, and I still remember when the bartender told me that the LL hadn't renewed their lease, and that the R&R was going to close for good beginning the new year in 2007. I literally couldn't believe it would really close. I thought for sure there would be some last minute reprieve and it would remain open.

Service was up and down, but the taplist was always very good, the food was solid and I loved the ambiance (pub was located in an old funeral parlor). The place just exuded character. It really hurt my heart when it closed.

The only upside is that the stupid bank that took over the building went belly up themselves just a couple of years later. If I could have, I would have danced on their grave.

2017? I thought it was gone a lot sooner than that.

Oops. Thanks for the catch. That was a typo. I meant 2007.

Wow... was great reading through this thread. Remembering way back when I was first introduced to good microbrews by a workmate in 1981. It was Redhook Ale at Murphy's Pub in Wallingford. I know there is something still sold as 'Redhook' these days but it hadn't been the same as the original since 1984.

Other brews we used to drink at the Irish Rose on Rose Hill near work was Bridgeport, Grants, Hales, and Widmer.

More recent brews that have gone are Big Al's (loved their Irish Red) and Lazy Boy (loved their IPA). There is a curse my wife and I cast on PNW breweries when we are there visiting and snag glasses from pubs to take home. We still have Lazy Boy and Big Al's glasses!

Memories..never the greatest beer to say the least, but that place and the places near it were old style Portland.

If you got the seats next to the big window..was a wonderful place to people watch. Especially at night..wonderful really.. That type of Portland is almost gone now..I think Mary's at least survives?

Bookshelves in a bar! I felt at home from the first visit. My last visit to Tugboat was good and memorable, but that's a story for pints and a session.

And yes, Mary's is still in business, last I heard.

That sign was still hanging long after they shut down. Hopefully someone saved it.

My exact reaction as well. I stil remember thinking that the atmosphere there was just so good, the beer would have to be pretty awful for me not to put it on the regular rotation list. As it turned out, the beer there really wasn't awful, but it was so mundane I very quickly stopped going there. I thought their impy stout was pretty decent, but otherwise...

They always seemed to have a quite good German import on tap also which is what i drank most. When i was married back in the early 2000s my wife and I would book a room once a month at the Riverside Marriot and we always ended up at the Tugboat ..after Kells. I liked the books and also the board games.
Damn pity that someone like Ex Novo hadn't taken it over and kept everything but the beers the same. That would have been awesome. But i think this was impossible because the building was unsafe after a fire at the old weird( Portland weird) Mexican place?
