    Interesting.
I’ll try to track down a chalice soon then

A bud chalice? Is that just ultra novelty or was there ever a time when lagers were served in a chalice in any old world areas?

If Orval was more affordable where I live it would be my daily drinker. As it is, I only have it a few times a year. Love it though.

One of my bucket lists places to go is to visit the abbaye . I've been close, but never have quite made it there.

I could jokingly make the same lament in Brussels — the supply has dwindled a bit (looking at you, importers ... actually, enjoy all you like, they'll make more. And I do at least have some set aside for this august occasion!)

I have a bunch in my cellar going back to '09, I want to do a vertical to '15 or '16 I think but I'm missing an '11 if I remember correctly. I'm sure I have one or two doubles I could use for this. I have 2 small Orval chalices to use too. My biggest problem is that the 20th is my missus birthday so that might put the kaibosh on me.

The missus likes Orval, maybe I should invite her to share one? That's where the small chalices are nice.

Just got some bottles. Does anyone know for sure if they are using American dating (MM/DD/YYYY) or European dating (DD/MM/YYYY) on imported bottles, mine says 02/09/2020. That the end of day I don’t care if it’s about 7 months old or over a year old but just like to know for the science of aging it.

Funny know about the Old World, but a chalice for lagers was a thing for a while, usually they were branded. I picked up a thick, heavy Genesee chalice at Salvation Army a couple of years ago, my FiL had one from Matt's

For sure DD/MM/YYYY, that's what pretty much all of the rest of the world uses. :stuck_out_tongue:

I resemble this... first beer I bought with my new fake ID back in 1985 when the drinking age was moving from 18 to 21, one month before my birthday each year.... First trappist (or any serious import for that matter) I’d had - it blew me away then and I love it still today. Will def have a few next weekend in honor and celebration.

Just noticed at a local retailer a lot of bottles of Orval on the shelf. Haven’t tried it for a few years. I’ve never been a fan, but It’s getting another shot.

I've got a two year old bottle of Orval in my cellar and I really hope that I will be able to find a halfway fresh one for a side-by-side tomorrow.

I just noticed this thread for the first time since it started somehow. I already have an errand to run this morning, so I'll pop over to the bottle shop and hope to still see some on the shelf. Hope to be joining in the fun, and finally tick this classic.

Has been a few years but haven’t decided if I will join. I will see. In my area they can be $8 a bottle just not my thing for that price

That's pretty rough, usually 4.99-5.99 here. I'm curious how wide the price spread is on a beer like Orval, how cheap do people see it? And does it push 10$ for anyone?

Our liquor store brought in in once. I stopped at one store on the middle if the island and bought everything they had, when I went back to my regular store I asked them to check the whole province for me. One store on the west coast had some and they said I couldn't have it. Is it bad when every liquor store manager in the province knows you?
