What's the last malt-forward beer that impressed you? (That's not high ABV or barrel-aged.)

Indeed, forgot about that stipulation in the title. :flushed: Something about those malt forward beers had my mind wandering:grin:

I did drink a Belgian inspired ale from a local spot but it wasn't impressive:stuck_out_tongue:

Coincidence? Mine have the same date. Probably why I'm finding them leaning a little to sharp and not smooth. It has a kind of stale grain flavor to it.

There's a little of that telltale German malt flavor lingering in the back, but the hops and grainy sharpness are upstaging it.

Still drinkable, just not optimal. I hope there's no trouble exporting this -- it's too good when fresh.

Yeah, it's not the best it can be now.

In other news, I bought another 4pack of Weihenstephaner Helles. I went to a different store. Same best before date, only paid $9.49.

Seeing as I just had a Steel Reserve 211 High Gravity, and I came in more than 10% +rDev ...

... no, this still did not impress me, but it was better than I expected, by a mile.

Pretty sure that name alone disqualifies it for the thread.

@Todd -- we may have to start the thread over, no one is reading the title after 8 pages!

Fair point - it is high ABV, but I think most of the time when we're thinking high ABV malty beers, we're thinking in the double digits.

I think many would agree that 8% would be considered high. Hell, I consider 7% pretty high for beer -- double digit ABV is hitting a different realm altogether.

Okay Todd, can we set a benchmark for "high ABV," at least for this thread?

The beer you started the thread with was only 5.3 -- pretty moderate to my thoughts, but we're seeing some bock-like beers being pushed, so -- yay or nay to these?

(seems a little easy to be "malt forward" at 7% and higher!)

I just added "(over 7%)" to the post. Still relies on people reading it though.

I’m kinda surprised Oberon hasn’t been mentioned since it is that time of year. I’d venture to say it’s probably the most widely distributed malt forward ale. I’ve been enjoying it for 2 weeks.

Oberon. I’ve been drinking it for 2 weeks and will have many more cases before November.
