I couldn't agree more with this, not about Slice (I've never had any of their beer), but as a general statement of what separates the truly great breweries.
Feels like that pendulum is slowly shifting, but a very accurate statement nonetheless.
Exactly what Suarez is for me. 4 hours round trip, so I don't do it all the time, but sometimes I find that I can't resist...their beer is just too good to go long without.

Sly Fox Haze Fix IPA - SF is not known for their IPAs but Vulpulin is pretty good if you like the old-school ones. Haze Fix is a new one to their lineup and if I am going IPA (which isn't often anymore) I do prefer hazy. This is pretty good but nothing to really set it apart from any other hazy on the market and no need to describe it really. But not a bad thing, though, as this is a nice local option. And at only 5.5% it has a nice drinkable aspect to it as well.

Hi NBWers! Been catching up on the NBW BIF thread today and the resulting porch destruction as we approach the official tasting date. Today's beer is courtesy of @Mbgreg :

Resident Culture Brewing Co. - Juice Runs the Game - 9% abv dipa

A - Pours a turbid pale lemon yellow with ample off-white fluffy head that settles down after a few minutes leaving scattered lacing.

S - Mostly tropical notes - pineapple and mango backed by some citrus.

T - Follows the nose with some additional grassy notes. Bitterness comes in with hints of pine and citrus rind on the finish.

M - Medium body, but not the fluffy creamy body I was expecting.

O - The description lists eight different hops: Nelson, Motueka, Strata, Galaxy, Citra, Talus, Enigma, and Vic Secret. I always question why breweries do this - there's no way that's not going to end up a muddled mess on the palate. While it's still a tasty beer, I think the end result could have been achieved with just a couple of the listed hops.

I have massive gratitude for the times I've been a beneficiary of your excursions to Slice, Christine . . . the times I've gone, I've originated from Sacramento, and even that's a grinding drive.

Whenever I see a hop bill like that, I think of Anthony Bourdain saying you should never eat Sunday brunch at a restaurant, that you're basically getting the week's leftovers (is that true, @tasterschoice62?). I don't know if it works quite that way with brewing, but I'm always a little suspect when you get past, say, three different hops.

Pours the color of a dark cola before settling into the glass where it is dark, dark brown and completely opaque. Loads of fizzy beige colored head, most of which dissipated quickly except for a thin layer that lasted a minute or two. Aroma is chocolate, raspberry and cherry. Taste is....interesting. I can't quite tell what it's trying to be. My nose smells the raspberry and cherry as I go to take a sip, but then I can't pick those up on the tongue. It's legitimately confusing me as I drink it because I don't taste what my nose tells me I'm going to taste. Feel is definitely thin. This is an interesting beer that goes down very easily / quickly, but I can't help but think that they didn't quite pull off what they were hoping for, but who knkows. In any event, really glad I got to try it. Thank you, James!

    Howdy NBW'ers

    Boston Rising from Jack's Abby

    Hoppy Lager

Poured from a can dated 3/30/21
    8 % abv 100 IBU's
hopped with Nelson, Galaxy and Citra

aggressive pour into a spiegelau glass yields a fluffy white head reducing to spotty lacing. Fairly clear light amber color
Slight earthy aroma and light hint of citrus
Taste has a bit of lime and some bready yeast like notes up front. Hops come through on the end.
Mouthfeel is a tick sticky and fairly well carbonated, Drinks a little like an IPA. Heavy and chewy for a lager. Dry to slightly bitter finish.
Overall pretty nice beer in Jack's Abby Rising series. Nice crisp clean taste and easy drinking.

I think it depends on how they use it. Say, two varietals for bittering; two late additions; another two for dry hopping; I could see getting up to a high number pretty quickly, because they're not all being used in the same way.

It also gives me comfort that some pretty darn fantastic IPAs have complex hop bills with 5 or more varietals (e.g. PtE, Heady, Enjoy By). Granted, those are some pretty exceptional brewers who know what they're doing.

Discussion aside, I've definitely had some experiences with IPAs where the individual nature of the varietals gets lost in the mix. Too many chefs and all that.

Next up double nickel - mirage...a black lager
    with saaz and warrior (interesting)...

Pours very dark brown to blackish. Low head retention but nice lacing from initial pour and I always love the light brown head on a beer.

Aroma caught me off guard it’s like a sweet fruity coffee, if you know coffee think like a super fruity Ethiopia. There is almost a tangy smelly to it too, hmm, not a fan of that.

Taste is little bit of that same fruity coffee, some subtle roast notes to it as well. There is some combination of flavors going on that is reminiscent of like cherry in chocolate.

Mouthfeel again hits pretty tangy like the aroma, it lingers a little bit as well after the sip. There is a low bitterness present as well.

I never like being harsh on a beer but I wanted to enjoy this a lot more than I did and tried to review objectively. I’ve enjoyed a lot of double nickels beers but this one isn’t the best, at least my first encounter with my four pack. I’m not sure where the “tangy” flavor I keep noticing is coming from but it really detracts from this beer. I’ll see how it evolves as I finish the glass.

Not sure about the brewing aspect but I agree with the Sunday brunch quote.
Chefs work their asses off on Saturday nights, the busiest and most impactful day of the week. Specials and an absurd amount of quality control along with speed and accuracy. Chefs hate Sunday mornings. Tired, maybe slightly hungover and dont want to put much effort into anything. I always left the brunch to someone else but still didnt see the quality I expected. And yes its possible some leftovers may be used. I hate Brunch. Every gig Ive had including the ones I am auditioning for now, I tell them no Sundays and no Brunch. I need that day for music festivals as well. All that said for some reason people fking love it. No matter what you serve. Theyre like mesmerized by Brunch for some reason.

OK, my stomach isn't settled, but I'm finally getting around to my second review of the weekend. There's a huge time disparity between this thread and my posting the beer over on WBAYDN?, and I still have nearly half the beer left in my glass (see, earlier, stomach issues).

    Hop-Fu!

I have quite a few hoppy beers to choose from, but since @Xul included some North Park glassware in his monstrous assault on my porch, I figured I should try some North Park beer.

It's appropriate that we're talking about beers with complex hop bills, as this one features Chinook, Simcoe, Citra, Amarillo, Mosaic, and Columbus, and clocks in at 7.5% ABV.

Pretty classic WC IPA, verging on imperial. I'm not loving the mouthfeel, as it's a touch syrupy, and super laden with hop oils that coat the tongue. I'm not hating the mouthfeel, either, it's just that there's room for improvement there.

To capture this beer's essence in a single word, I'd go with "resinous." Given a few more words, I'd throw in notes of peach, lemon zest, orange, grapefruit, pine, cracker, grass, and basil.

Hop-Fu! is really darn good, but it doesn't grab me the way Blinding Sunset did, which immediately strode onto the stage of my palate, announced, "I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I've got four legs and no mouth," (don't ask how it announced it) ... and then it totally backed up that smack talk.

Yeah, I think Bourdain was amused not only by the fact that the food itself was shitty,, but that most chefs and cooks *hated* brunch. I myself am not a big fan, between the long lines and ridiculous prices.

MCS Bourbon from Culmination. I'm pretty sure MCS stands for "Multnomah County Stout." Bought it when I was in Bend a couple weeks ago.

12oz can served in a snifter. Dated 12/22/2020. Bought it in Bend, either at Market of Choice or Newport Avenue Market.

Pours black with a small head. Looks thick. Smell is thick fudge/chocolate syrup, vanilla, booze, anise, black coffee.

Taste is similar, but less boozy. Lower on the anise, higher on the fudge/chocolate. More oak.

Mouthfeel is super thick. Overall, very good beer.

    Blazy Hazy, indeed!

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/147/540031/

    12 oz. bottle.
Moderate pour yields a nearly one inch white head over a slightly hazy light golden body with sticky lacing. Nose of a bit of tropical fruit, slight citrus, and load of dank pine. Flavor is very dank with pine, slight citrus, and slight tropical fruit. This could quite possibly put off more than a few of the hazybois. Nice feel and overall, this one certainly lives up to its 420 moniker. Cheers and blaze on brothers!

Yeah, case in point, maybe. (I'm thinking lose 2 of 3 [out of 5 total] of Cashmere,Simcoe, & Amarillo in this one. )
Overall : Nothing WoW!, but enjoyable, & easy-drinking . That said , it does feel like that some of the hop flavors cancel-out, and leave slightly-diminished flavor . Best approximation : think Juice Bomb [Sloop] + a bit of Hennepin [Ommegang] , for the spicy saison element, but with a dialed-back flavor intensity. (75-80% of that of those two?)
Best By date :7/29/21* . Let sit out for awhile before opening. Approximately 50F.

    A
: Moderately hazy yellow, with one finger of coarse white head.(Pineapple juice-ish , though with my flash settings it looks more orange-ish - it's not )
S : Smell is fresh pineapple and tangerine, with slight mango, grass, guava, and bread dough.
T : Taste is grapefruit, tangerine , vague tropical fruit mix, light saison-like spiciness , and a faint touch of green onion. Light-moderate bitterness.
F : Feel is light-medium, with soft-ish, but coarse carbonation tingle/prickle. There is a slight astringency at the back of the throat, that knocks the score down 0.25-0.50. Maybe a little green yet? I'll save one to revisit in 3-4 weeks.
*A canning date, rather than/in addition to the Best By date might be more informative in this regard , eh Ommegang?
