I thought this was a kinda cool thing to see. Sort of like a barrel pick for beer. I wonder if this is going to catch on.

For those that don't have Insta - Beer Bazaar/Oak Trail Spirits (sister stores) picked a 1792 BiB barrel, gave it to Mikerphone, and have them put ISLBS in it. The are calling it Hit Single Select Seric Vol 1, so I imagine more releases like this are coming.

 

Beer Bazaar had a few bottles and I was able to get one this morning when they opened. Looking forward to trying this one. Don't know the name of the guy who works at BB, but he said it was the most barrel forward beer he's ever had from Mikerphone.

 

It is just the ISLBS base with no adjuncts, so I am particularly excited, as the non-adjunct ones have been my favorite of the Miker BA stouts.

While a few Illinois breweries are putting out beers called "Things we don't say" hoping to bring attention to mental health, Mikerphone puts out a beer parodizing a celebrity who has famously struggled with mental health issues.

A pretty bad look, IMO.

 

I'm just hella into lactose and algae IPAs that mock people with clear mental health issues right now bro. /S

 

This happens all the time with local liquor stores doing store pick bourbon and working with local breweries to fill the barrel with beer. Heck, I think most of Pips ba stuff goes into Amans store pick barrels.

 

I'm not thrilled with the name either. That said, there are currently about 40 IL breweries participating in the #thingswedontsayipa project...including Mikerphone.

All I can say is... LOL? I like their beers but they have become a goofy caricature, and in this case a goofy caricature that's sort of hypocritical and mildly offensive.

Thanks for the correction on the # - I just saw a couple note it on instagram. I think it's a worthy cause, particularly this year and regardless of any industry specifics.

I mean, is it offensive? Are they making fun of her? If calling their beer Britney Spirulina is supposed to be a parody or joke at Britney's expense, then I guess the joke went over my head. Could someone please explain it?

 

Definitely going over my head as well. I mean, their beer Hop Me Baby One More Time isn't offensive, right? (I don't know if they have a beer with that name, I just assume they do and am too lazy to look it up).

 

Hop me baby one more time is a song name, not an individual's name. Offensive (even with mildly in front of it), may be a little strong, I guess this elicited a little more than just the typical eye roll from me. It mostly just seems like bad taste IMO.

 

The closest thing I can find is that Brittany, France is famous for its seaweed exports including spirulina. So, yeah, seems more like a really bad stretch to shoehorn a pun to something music related and then the beer itself.

I don’t see how the joke is supposed to be on Britney though. The only joke here is how far these music and beer puns have fallen since the original Misty Mountain Hop/ Smells Like Bean Spirit.

 

Isn’t this the same asshat that had to backtrack the Sunday Bloody Sunday beer cause he didn’t understand the meaning of the song (but I thought he was soo music orientated...) and how offense it was?

 

I don't think there was any nefarious intent here but I agree with what others have said, it does seem in bad taste.

Pretty much any news surrounding Brittany Spears as of late has been extremely negative. Specifically regarding her mental health. Just doesn't seem like a great time to market a parody beer off her, especially when other breweries are working together to bring awareness to mental health issues specifically.

Again I don't think any of this was intentional. Just bad timing and they probably didn't think it through.

 

I agree. I didn’t make the connection so I can understand where Mike didn’t also. But once the connection is pointed out, it’s clear that it’s not a great idea.

 

Well, I learned something today! Although no offense, I hope the next time I dome a bomber of BA stout, it kills the brain cells that remember Brittany's famous seaweed exports and not something important I need for my job or something.

Also, yeah - they are running out of ideas. Although they still haven't taken me up on my idea of a gulab jamun flavored stout called We Jamun.

 

This guy is a turd and so is his brewery.

I love it how you guys always try to dig a light to the other end of the tunnel for every misstep he has taken.

Starting to think he does this shit on purpose with his timing of beer names.
