Respectfully - that's just not true. If you look at a wall of single malts I would say less than 25% of the bottles are peated, probably closer to 10%. Most single malts are non-peated, and like 9 out of 10 use refill ex-bourbon barrels (so they shouldn't be too much different than fresh bourbon barrels except more subtle since they have been used a few times).

Again respectfully - it kind of blows my mind that most Americans think Scotch (single malt as well as blended) are "smoky". It's just statistically inaccurate, and of the biggest brands - basically non of them are peated at all (The Glenlivet, Glenfiddich,The Macallan, Glenmorangie ... zero peat). This idea that they are smoky or peated - I don't know where it comes from but it's certainly not based on anyone actually tasting them. Johnnie (admittedly a huge brand, not single malt though), Lagavulin, Laphroaig - are the only 3 common brands that are peated.

    Anyways, carry on.

It really did sell out, however, every year we have some non pickups and forfeits of beer. that resulted in having a few cases available to the archive this year. Hopefully nobody is stirred!

Point taken. Admittedly, when I hear a beer is Scotch Barrel Aged, I think peatiness, but as you point out, that's a bit misguided.

    Thanks for the clarity.. .

I find all of this hilarious now but mannn I was sour back then haha. Good changes came from that though, and I believe I liked year 2 Chocolate Reign better than the first even.

No sourness here... I did have a good chuckle. That was some serious drama back in the day, but the societies have become much better since then! So while it sucked at the moment, it was ultimately a good thing.

Just opened a Double Vanilla tonight and had the exact same reaction. Still great but no longer mind blowing.

With all of these adjunct BT releases in recent years I am consistently finding that with age they frequently trend towards a general sweetness that is pleasant but less distinct than fresh. For the ones that I like best (Blueberry Pancake, Double Vanilla) the best bet is to drink them as fresh as possible.

As noted up thread a bit, I had the opposite reaction with the non-adjunct 2017 Port BT (similar to you) and found that age had clearly improved it and removed some of the harsh edges it had when fresh.

I think some of this might be because they improved the BT recipe in 18, the result being that variants are more mellow and enjoyable fresh.

But yeah, I'm now erring on the side of trying to enjoy adjunct beers (BT and others) within a year, and mostly only cellaring barrel-only treatments.

Opened my dv bt tonight because you guys had me curious. Just as amazeballs as I recall. That being said, vanilla villain might have been a spoiler for us...
