No love for Michigan? Two Hearted, Crooked Tree, Hopslam, Double Trouble, The Oracle, The Liberator? Nothing?

I stand corrected. Now that I really think about it, there really is world class IPA's all over the country. White Rajah out of Ohio, Boulevard out of Missouri, and of course Hopslam from Michigan just to name a few.

I have to say it was quite humorous to stroll along the streets of Bruges drinking Rodenbach out of a can.

Drinking Zombie Dust in a can at the Indy 500? Now that's a dream.

I'm all for great beer in cans - hell, in any container! The first canned stuff that really got my attention was Oskar Blues. When I saw the quality brews they canned I knew the market was going to jump all over that.

Here is a good article on "The Eco-Guide to Responsible Drinking" that takes on the can vs. bottle debate from a green perspective. In a nutshell:

Local breweries (either bottles, cans, or draft) are usually the best option
Draft beer would be next due to long life of kegs (15+ years on average)
Refillable glass bottles are better than either recycled glass or recycled aluminum
Recycled aluminum has a slight edge over recycled glass
Virgin glass is way better than virgin aluminum

My preference is usually draft, glass, then cans. But that's simply my 2 cents.

Just to give a little heads up. I recently spoke to someone who works and brews at Alpine. This person told me once they get the new brewery up and running (some time away) they would love to start canning their beers.

Esthetically, I must admit I had a problem with cans until I tried some of the offerings from 21St Amendment. They convinced me good beer could come in cans. I started doing some research on cans versus bottles as an environmental issue. If bottles were standardized and reused they would be the better choice. But, that is not the world we live in right now. Recycled glass is drawing such a low price that it is difficult to justify. The current price for aluminum is high enough that it is early to find buyers in the recycle market. And, those cans are so very convenient.

It is not new but it is probably better for the beer to be canned. I like the trend. Sixpoint, Surly, Dales, SN, Caldera, Brooklyn, Great Crescent, 21st Amendment, etc. So many!!

Much longer than a year. I've seen since 2001 and 2008, not sure exactly when.

They also can their Amber, and the pint glasses sold at the brewery look like 12 oz beer cans.

Isn't Fremont still toying with the idea of canning their beers?
