Wow. Looks like they’re exactly what I’ve been looking for. I’ll add it to my list of GR breweries to visit. I love 2 and a half hours away so it’s kind of hard for me to make it out there for just a day so I’ve been trying to plan a weekend trip to the are for quite sometime but it never materializes. I’m certain there’s well over a couple days worth of brewery touring in the area.

Vivant is definitely a must visit if you haven't done so. Their building, known as The Chapel, is stunning and the food is pretty spectacular as well. Try the Duck Nachos... They are truly world class. The Poutine is another favorite of mine.

    Cheers!

It’s definitely on my list now! Thanks for the recommendation. Off topic for the thread but on topic for this particular subject, do you have any understanding of the difference between saison and the other brews classified as “farmhouse ale”? It seems like BA only separates saison and biere de garde here on our database but looking online it seems there is many more varieties and I see some that are classified/labeled simply as “farmhouse ale” looking at different brewery sites. I actually enjoyed some a couple weeks ago from a brewery in Traverse City.

:wink:Fair enough. I’ve read quite a few articles today regarding the subject but hardly any of them explain actual differences aside from place of origination.

My Horrock's also carries some of their beers and I've had a few. I put them in the very good category. The bottles that I've seen are all 500 ml. and sold as singles. If I remember correctly, the larger bottles put their price in the $11-$15 range. I have seen no cans from them. I'll definitely visit the brewery if I ever get back up to Marquette.

BA mentions in the text below the style header of Saison that they are also known as Farmhouse Ales. I can't recall where I read this, but it seems one defined difference is that sometimes the farmhouse style is soured, and Barrel + Beam may be proof of this difference.

EDIT: I misspoke above. I think the last time I looked at the BA Saison style definition, the header did not include "Farmhouse Ale."

Totally jumping off from the Farmhouse topic, has anyone heard any info on these August brewers guild beer festivals? Are they full blown beer fests or dumbed down versions.

You’re absolutely right. The style is now denoted “Farmhouse Ale-Saison” and “Farmhouse Ale-Biere De Garde” and now a specialty style; “Farmhouse Ale-Sahti”. And, by doing a little further clickwork, I inadvertently answered my own questions. I basically wanted to know the difference from a Saison to the other styles of Farmhouse Ale such as those mentioned above, although the internet points to many other styles and subsets of those. The BA styles page does provide some good descriptors though for what is logged in our database. Cheers!

I am completely unaware. I’ll have to look into this more. I didn’t know there were any special fests in August.

I'll be heading over to SW Michigan (St Joseph area) next week for a few days. Planning on hitting Transient while I'm there. Any other recommendations on what breweries to hit up while I'm in the area?

After some poking around it seems as though they are poised to offer all the same amenities and features of any other BG fest, right down to admission/closing times. I would really like to attend the one in TC but we will see if that’s possible. I would really REALLY like to attend the September fest in Marquette but that is unlikely. Let me know if you end up buying tickets to any of the three.

Greenbush in Sawyer is always a good visit for the beers as well as the food. In Benton Harbor a visit to The Livery is time well spent. Not too far away is Arclight in Watervliet. They have a great sour beer program, but their standard beers are also worth going for.

I've got to go there soon. The brewery is listed here on BA and some of the beers sound interesting. A 2% abv smoked beer has to be seen/drank to be believed. https://www.seedzbrewery.com

Their Sahti is soooooooo good! I'm gonna drink a few bottles of it while I'm back home in Esky this weekend. Also, Uberon is my favorite summer beer hands down. I miss my home state.

I'd add Watermark in Stevensville to the list. Great atmosphere and beer.

I've always had luck with Tapistry Brewing, Heart Full of Napalm is a great double IPA.
