Alcohol is a poison, but obviously a poison of choice. I don't want to charge up that hill with the Roughriders, but damnit I like beer and have all of my life. We all have choices of what to think and who we may align with. My Grandad from Birmingham drank whiskey and went to California at the turn of the 20th century. He was a cowboy and friend of Jack London, a lawyer that never went to law school. He told me amazing stories. That's enough for me from now on....

Beer makes me mellow, Bourbon makes me funny, Gin makes me want to argue.

I think the sedative and euphoric effects of hops are pretty well established. I know I've seen at least one study finding these impacts from at least one of the alpha acids at levels present in beer. And considering the rise in usage of aroma hops and the increasing understanding of the psychoactivity of terpenes i think its safe to credit hops with some sort of impact.

On the liquor and wine front I do agree that all we can do is speculate. Its clear to me that there are likely cultural expectations at play for people. Certain drinks are seen as refined and others as more rugged, one may be inclined to act classy/rowdy depending on the expectations they bring to a drink OR one may reach for one beverage when they've got an itch to raise hell and reach for another when they seek a night of genial conversation.
