As the heat of summer fades...:fire::fire::fire: uhhh...scratch that

As the calendar turns to...what's that? It's still July??????? :expressionless:

As images of the Bavarian lozenge start filling my instagram feed, my thoughts naturally turn to my absolute favorite beer season. It's the most wonderful time of the beer (apologies to Andy Williams). Hopefully this thread can serve as a way to give some love to local-ish Oktos. For those that missed last fall's online tasting, here's my final ranking from that weekend:

Yes, there are a few imports, but I'm hoping we can keep this thread more regionally-focused. In any case, I'm excited to try at least two new beers:

Dovetail posted their Festbier should be released in a couple weeks. Also, PW is labeled as a Festbier this year fwiw. Looking forward to both.

Am I the only one who has no clue what the difference between a festbier and a marzen is?

EDIT: rather than just google it & trust some beer blog, I will attempt to summon the maestro @jesskidden

Oktoberfest/Märzen style covers a broad spectrum from the darker to paler.

The earlier traditional Oktoberfest biers in Germany were dark malty lagers. Over time, the beer served at most tents at the official Oktoberfest have become lighter.

The darker versions tend toward being maltier, a bit sweeter, and with toasty melanoidin and even caramel-like flavors, whereas the paler versions tend to be more like strong Pilsners.

When people say "Festbier", they usually mean the paler versions (also called the Wiesn style).
When people say "Märzen" they usually mean the more traditional darker version.

Even many of the German brewers have adopted this naming distinction, at least on their beers intended for the USA market.

Kicking things off with Werk Force Brewing Co:

It’s a respectable domestic Märzen (if you’re not too strict about style). Definitely more hoppy and sharp than the traditional versions, but at least it isn’t overtly sweet. It would benefit from a little more heft in the malt to make it seem more balanced. I enjoy it, but if you want something true to style, do yourself a favor and peel off the label and write something like “hoppy amber lager” on the can.

Nice. I missed out on Dovetail last year, won’t make that mistake again. I’m totally stoked that PW is doing a Festbier. Prior to last year, I was all about the Märzens but something flipped for me and I gravitated much more towards the Festbier/Wiesn style. I love PW’s lagers, so I can’t wait for this!

Apparently. :stuck_out_tongue: Kinslahger has done both styles the last couple of years, they even sell a combo 4-pack with 2 cans of each style.

Hmmm, not much of a head on this one. It was there when I poured the beer, but apparently had better things to do than keep me company while finishing some stuff for work. Anyway, the smell is caramelly with some undifferentiated malts. Taste is a bit nutty, a bit sweet, and quite bitter. It seems more like a lighter-bodied ESB than a Märzen. Carbonation is surprisingly prickly considering the lack of head. I had a Weltenburger Kloster Anno 1050 yesterday and the On Tour just isn’t in the same league.

I drank two Midwest Oktoberfest beers this week, both of the traditional amber style. Fat Head's was good, but Masthead's was much more flavorful; it's now one of my favorite Märzens.

    Getting around to Dovetail:

This is a good, not great, beer. It’s pleasantly dry with some grassy, earthy notes. Nice malt backbone with a bready, almost sourdough, quality. Also getting a taste of orange peel on the finish. I like that it’s not caramelly or sweet, but this is a FULL-BODIED beer! It clocks in at 6.7% ABV, and that heft is perceptible. This is definitely a one-and-done beer, not exactly what I’m looking for in a Festbier. It’s also a bit one-note, in that it doesn’t have the depth of flavor or complexity of the best beers in this style. I wonder how much the richness and alcohol contribute to that.

    Ok.

What style does everyone prefer the most? Using @MNAle's simple description.

    "Marzen" of "Festbier"?

I would go with "Festbier" myself.

    I prefer Märzen.

The greater complexity and maltier flavor seems more of a fall beer to me. A lot of complaints that they are too sweet (and some are, but most aren't - for me) or too much caramel (but I don't mind that), but a well done märzen - like Ayinger when at its best - is sooo nice!

I probably lean more towards Festbier/Wiesn style these days. A couple years ago I’d have said Märzen. I still really enjoy them, but my preferences overall have shifted to lighter/crisper beers.

I really like both, and would select which one to drink based on my mood, ambient temp (festbier can be served colder), or what food I might be eating. All else equal, I'll lean toward marzen.

If you come across Roaring Table's Festbier, I recommend it. Picked it up today and enjoyed my first can. It's my favorite local so far this year but still looking forward to trying a few more, including the PW one when it's released. I prefer the Festbier style as well but has anyone tried Hopewell's Endgrain?

@steveh was also singing the praises of this one ... the problem is finding it. If I do see it though I'll pick it up.
I had it last year (so not this year's batch) and was not a fan - but I'm also not a fan of any of Hopewell's lagers. I find that they are very grainy - like cereal grain - and lack the rich bready malts I prefer in my lagers. Endgrain fell into that same category for me.

From the brewery, which probably does not help you. Are you in the city? They said it was their largest distro run so hopefully you can come across some. Here are tags they mentioned as receiving it (and their RTB Pils likely too). Good luck!
