I remember reading or hearing about Yuengling making it to the west coast mid 2021. But forgot all about it till just now. Has anyone heard any news on this?

    Yuengling news:
If you’re an East Coast transplant, you may be missing one of Pennsylvania’s most iconic beers. Founded in 1829, Yuengling is the nation’s oldest still-operating brewery. They just announced a joint venture with Molson Coors to distribute their beer on the West Coast. Molson Coors will brew Yuengling beers for the western market, with rollout expected to begin in mid-2021.

Maybe Todd knows more on this?

They did mention mid 2021. Its past mid. Maybe they hit a Covid stall? Thanks Todd.

I thought the need was a distribution deal with MolsonCoors for west of the Mississippi. I don't recall hearing about a specific time frame for specific markets

Thats sounding familiar, they'll be brewing in Texas for distribution to the west. I wouldn't expect them to come straight to CA. Theyve got a lot of less competitive markets to fill up between their home markets and our here

Is there any appeal other than nostalgia? The beer is mediocre on a good day and politics aside, Dick Yuengling sounds like mega-a'hole.

End of Q2 was about as specific as they got for when you'd start seeing it in western states.

Yeah, no need to turn this into a political rant, but I agree with you about the beer. When I lived in Baltimore, periodically there'd be some Yuengling post in the Mid Atlantic forum, with someone waxing nostalgic about their lager. I always assumed that you had to be from the SEPA area, growing up with Yuengling beer, to appreciate it.

Calling the beer mediocre is doing it a kindness IMHO.

It is now just about Q2 2022 and still no Yuengling on the west coast. WTF

I know the beer isn't good but damnit, you can't promise it and then not deliver.

Agreed. About 40 years ago I liked Lord Chesterfield, but not so much now. And it and the porter aren't likely to show up on the west coast anyway. Actually this isn't the first time Yuengling has been brewed by a non-owned brewer. They sourced their Black and Tan from the Allentown brewery (then Stroh, now Boston Beer) for a while.

Not genuinely. Mostly I'm just tired of being asked if I carry it in store.

We don't even get it in Illinois, though I much rather see Fat Heads cross the Indiana border westward into the Abyss.

Current distribution map (23 states covered) from Yuengling's website:

Based on their FAQ, it appears they have no upcoming expansion plans in the works, and their previous announcement regarding their expansion into California is not going to happen anytime soon.

"West" might mean something different for a brewery founded in 1829...

As Yuengling expanded their distribution region in the past couple of decades (thanks to building a new brewery and buying the Schlitz-built facility in Tampa) they typically only entered one (maybe two?) states at a time, in most cases IIRC working with MC distributor's network (in part, thanks to AB's discouraging their Red network member from carrying major competitors' brands).

With the closing/sale of Irwindale, one would expect that MC would likely have to brew some Yuengling at Golden, too, to reach California and the PNW states. Golden was the brewery that a lot of Pabst's west coast brands were moved to IIRC.

The MC Ft. Worth brewery originally brewed only 4 Yuengling brands (Trad. Lager, Light Lager, Golden Pilsner and Flight - their old portfolio's notable brands like Chesterfield Ale, Porter and Black & Tan seem neglected and forgotten) but - above- it appears they'll do their Oktoberfest this fall in Texas, too.

The joint venture between the two brewers is called the Yuengling Company LLC, registered in TX with Wendy L. Yuengling the manager, at Yuengling's Pottsville address. I guess she'd know their future schedule.

I reviewed the 2018 version of the Yuengling Oktoberfest. I was was disappointed. I think it was closely related to the Trad. Lager. I remembered that some earlier Yuengling Oktoberfest versions were more full bodied.

I last had it on tap in 9/12 while living/working in Morgantown. So it might have been one of the "more full bodied" versions you're referencing. While I didn't think it was awful (my review score was 3.7), I remembered thinking at the time "why in the world would I want to drink this as opposed to an Oktoberfest version actually made in Munich." These days it's pretty easy to find relatively fresh, well made Marzens from Germany (even in Texas I'm guessing), so no need or desire to obtain Yuengling's version. I'll buy a domestic made marzen if there's something unusual or unique about it, but Yuengling's version just tasted like a watered down edition of the real McCoy.
