Once again syncing up with der @WunderLlama , this time, as he noted, on a much smaller beer:

Schilling Beer Co. Glimmer Smoked Helles, 5.1% ABV

Our biggest difference, by a mile, came in appearance: Maynard got much more head production from his can, and my retention was straight up poor. Like him, I found the smoke to be fairly restrained, but a lovely accent to a very balanced and tasty Helles. Body is on the fuller side for the style, but that's not a detriment, as it drinks clean and easy.

I really like this one! I like smoke beers of all kinds, and all strengths, but I really enjoyed the subtlety of the smoke in this one, adding depth to the profile without dominating.

Love the glass! I couldn't agree more about the BIF crowd. It's incredible. Also, this beer sounds amazing. Enjoy!

My next new beer is Double Barrel Parabola. I bought a few bottles and then heard about the tap issue from @Resistance88. So, I look forward to tasting this to see how the bottled beer tastes. Poured from fridge temp. Pours a gorgeous black with tan head.

Nose: This is Parabola on steroids! Dark chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, toffee, dates, prunes, brown sugar, and a nice layer of roasted malts. This smells incredible!

Taste: Magical. Dark chocolate, roasted malts, black licorice, burnt toffee, bourbon, and tons of dark fruit. Blackberries, chocolate-covered cherries, figs, dates, and plums. So much going on here. The Parabola is definitely here, but the flavors are amped up. I could sip on this for hours.

Mouthfeel and overall: The mouthfeel is just under the thick category. It's not syrupy, but it's not thin. The aftertaste is sweet toffee, and it's lovely. Overall, this is a huge winner for me.

Conclusion - apparently something strange happened when on tap. The bottled version is amazing.

Before I snooze out I wanted to chime in to say that I’m glad to see the thread rolling and going very well. @Roguer in particular is killing it!

    Also this:

… is quite cool and original. Nobody said we were supposed to type everything here, nothing wrong with your writing skills BTW. You should see that of my doctor and the pharmacist trying to decipher it.

    Cheers.

Happy NBW day 2! I have a trio of beers from my friend @BBThunderbolt in NBW BIF #14, and one of them is a “milestone” beer, so indulge me a bit because my 2nd post today in this, my favorite recurring thread on my favorite website, will probably be a bit ….. verbose.

Anywho, here’s beer #1, a fresh hop WCIPA. I am already salivating.

This pours a beautiful golden straw color with a slightly creamy white head that provides a bit of lacing. The nose has a bit of citrus, and there’s a bit of berry (thanks Strata), but this beer primarily has a very floral nose, courtesy of the Bravo hops.

The taste has a bit of citrus, but it’s the berry and floral notes that shine in this fresh hop beer and there’s a nice bitterness to accompany those flavors .

The mouthfeel is crisp and dry, per the style. My first beer from these guys, and one I’d enjoy on the regular if it was available to me.

Good evening everyone! I am in Door County, WI for the weekend so I have been drinking a lot of New Glarus beer - none of which is new to me. However I did grab two new beers this weekend to review. First up is Urban Artifact - Bushel a sour apple gose. Not a WI brewery, but one we do not get in IL.

I will be upfront - I have had 3 cans of this over the last two days and I still cannot decide if I like it or not.

It pours a hazy, but still see-through light golden color. Thin fizzy white head forms on the beer before quickly dissipating. In terms of appearance it looks like a classic gose. Aroma has notes of baked spiced apples - like a fresh baked apple pie in a can - cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander and all spice all waft across the nose. I am not getting much in the way of salt or the underlying gose as that baked apple aroma really dominates.

The taste is where things get a bit interesting. So, you get the baked apples and spices up front - fresh baked apples, nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, and coriander all come through. But then the back end of the gose comes through providing notes of wheat, crackery malt and salt. The salinity is not overpowering, but it is very noticeable. And that is where I cant decide if I like it or not. It reads on my palate like an apple pie that got over salted. Feel is light, brightly carbonated and crisp giving is an almost cider like feel. (A feel I suspect is reinforced by the apple flavors). Pretty dry on the finish.

Overall this is a really interesting gose. What I like about this is that they made it unique, but it is still recognizable as a gose. I think I like it, but I also suspect this is not a beer for everyone. That being said, it makes a great autumnal/thanksgiving beer.

I will be back shortly with another beer from the very local Door County Brewing Co.

Finally some self indulgent photos from the absolutely beautiful scenery up here in Door County - its one of my favorite places to get away to. And to top it off the leaves are all changing right now, so its extra gorgeous.

Would love to try that . . . I thought the rye character in this year's base Parabola was too black-peppery and imbalanced..

#2, this is beer #4,000 for me. I’m not much of a “milestone” guy, because I just love beer for the beer (and the camaraderie that accompanies a love for beer), not to wrack up numbers.

But 4,000 is a big, round number, so maybe a milestone beer is in order. I considered reserving it for a whale or maybe a Sierra Nevada beer because I’ve reviewed/rated more of their beers than any other brewery (and I have their 2021 Oktoberfest in my beer fridge), but I decided to go a different direction.

If you participate regularly in the NBW thread, you see references to the BIF associated with this thread. The BIF dates back 6 or 7 years, and the thread dates back to when I was a teenager (I keed, but just a little). I’ve participated in every NBW BIF except one since October 2016 (#4, IIRC), and I’ve probably received around 300 beers new to me courtesy of these BIFers in that time.

Im not a math major, but that’s around 8% of my total beers, and they’ve all been from “very good” to “world class” (with one exception, @Roy_Hobbs ). So for this milestone beer, I’m reviewing a beer from @BBThunderbolt , and using a glass he sent to me 4-1/2 years ago that I’ve use probably more than any single glass I own.

PS: the first beer I reviewed here was Hopslam, 11-1/2 years ago.

    And I reviewed it -rDev.

    As a notorious overrater, you can’t make this shiznit up, right @Roguer , @BBThunderbolt , @Ozzylizard , @FBarber , @2beerdogs , @JayORear , @Roy_Hobbs ?

Pours a brilliant copper color, crystal clear, with a light tan head. The nose is rich caramel, rye, and more than a bit of stone fruit.

The caramel and rye are very forward, but it’s the stone fruit that I’m really enjoying (I’m reviewing this live because I have a fat thumb and posted this before it was ready, so I’m flying in “Edit” mode). So much flavor in a 6% ABV beer, it’s ridonkulous - and a perfect beer for a cool fall evening around a fire pit. I could drink this for DAYS. A fantastic beer for #4,000.

Parabola is my all time fave beers but it was all bourbon on tap. Even bartenders agreed it wasn't just me , but as i said they did say it's much better in the bottles. I don't regret passing on them at all as i have too many in my Parabola in my fridge.

I'm happy you loved it tho!! Fuck yea
