I noticed that Hardywood Park Craft Brewery posted their official Gingerbread Stout release information for 2021 to their Facebook, including release dates for each variant. What I noticed in particular was that the promotional photos show the barrel aged variants, such as Bourbon Barrel GBS and Kentucky Christmas Morning, come in the “stubby” 12 oz bottles. Usually the barrel aged variants come in the tall 750ml bottles with the cork and cage. Is there a reason why these variants are coming in what could be considered a drastic decrease in size from previous years?

I think most everything "interesting"/higher-test at HW has gone to stubbys lately.... 4x12oz if you see it in stores, or 2x12oz in the sets. You can check the GBS Set link to see what they're more than likely going to be available in. https://hardywood.com/2021-gbs-season/

I'm pretty sure this questions was covered during their GBS Set announcement video but I do not recall the reasoning behind it. I'm sure some of the reason is the glass bottle shortage so those 750s may be tough to come by for the quantity they on a regular basis for stuff beyond the GBS variants. They have been slowly transitioning their BA stuff and one off higher abv stuff into these stubby bottles for a few months now.

I'm personally a fan of the move to this smaller format......as long as the priciing per ounce stays comparable. I'm not stuck with trying to kill a bottle in a sitting if I am going solo or if I do want to share I just have multiple bottles if we're sharing in person or simply pass along a bottle for a longer distance share.

I make the trip up to Richmond from ENC each year for a case of the Bourbon Barrel variant (it’s my favorite beer of all time). While the size decrease is a bit steep, I’m fine with the change as long as the bottle cap doesn’t do that weird “rusting” process that I’ve noticed with some metal cap bottled beers in the past.
