I just recently tried my first quad (The Sixth Glass, latest review), and I'd like to know what others I should try next? Good representations of the style that aren't crazy expensive. Actually, the cheaper the better. What are some beers that are true, good specimens that won't kill my wallet? I saw a thread here recently about some $85/4-pack Trappist... That's not for me.

Rochefort 10 or St. Bernardus Abt 12 are off the chains and readily available...

    Cheers!

Just did a blind tasting tonight of Westvleteren XII, St. Bernardus Abt 12, Rochefort 10, Pannepot 2011, and Straffe Hendrik.

I easily preferred Pannepot over all the others. If you can get it, I highly recommend trying it.

Are you just looking for quads specifically or traditional Trappist styles? The seven Trappist breweries don't only brew quads.

Easy to find are Chimay and St. Bernardus. A little more harder to find are Rochefort and Pannepot.

Pannepot is pretty darn amazing, just had a 2010 last night. I'm not sure I'd put it ahead of the "holy trinity" (St. Bernardus 12, Westvleteren 12, and Rochefort 10), however I've never done a blind taste test, either.

Forgot to mention Pannepot in my above post...Pannepot 2007 is easily my favorite of the whole bunch...

    Cheers!

How easy/hard is it to get Orval in the US? 'Cause that's the best of the bunch. Also very versatile in terms of cellaring - it's great fresh, very different but still great after 6 months, different yet again after 1 year etc. Here in the UK that would be the default Trappist, you can get it in a lot of places for £2-3/bottle (about $4) which is as cheap as they come here.

No problem in Chicago. I could walk into most bottle shops and come out with it right now. Still wondering if the OP is looking for recommedations specifically for quads or other Trappist styles as well. If he is looking for other styles Orval is a definite must-buy.

These. I loved these beers before I even got into Belgians at all. Wasn't very impressed with much else I had from Belgium at that time. Now it's completely different.

Well, one night I was at a certain bar and I had a few (maybe a few more than I should have) but I saw La Trappe, Quad. I ordered it. I received it in a typical quad glass AND it had a purple light around it, just like when Charlie Murphy saw Rick James and there was the aura, La Trappe looked purple or frosty blue or something, Like an Alaskan Iceberg, and I took a sip, and it changed my life, man. That's the best quad I've ever had to this day.

I might be the minority, but I prefer Ommegang Three Philosophers over St. Bernardus 12.. it's cheaper too. Don't get me wrong though, St. Bernardus 12 is nice..

Sixth Glass pretty much kills it, but I like The Reverend from Avery for another American quad, and it comes in pretty reasonably priced bombers for what you get. For a true Trappist beer, you can't go wrong with the Chimay Blue/Grand Reserve, and it's not super pricey either.

Chimay has some good beers that are easy to find. They have a quad, tripel and dubbel. All of which are very good. Try some other stuff from St. Bernardus too.
