    Excellent point.

Once a brewery has shown that they are willing to prioritize chasing the syrup/fruit/smoothie fads, when those customers inevitably move on to the next thing the brewery is going to have one hell of a time trying to reengage the 'beer-that-tastes-like-beer' crowd.

    Far enough...

My position is: when you start going way beyond the Rheihheistgebot or even basic adjunct (i.e., adjunct lage), farmhouse styling, or basic barrel-aging, I'm thinking we're in a post-beer era...pastries, fruity slushes, etc. -- they're not 'beer' per se, they're just some kind of different fermented, malted beverage. I mean, the lines are blurred. I accept that. Still...

    Just don't call it beer...that's all I ask...

I'm sorry but I absolutely despise the "Beer that tastes like beer" phrase.

What does it even mean? Do IPA's taste like beer? Do Hefe's? Lambics? Saisons? Goses? How about Quads? Or a nice Braggot? Gruit?

I get it, and I think I used to be where you are on this, but then I started thinking about the difference between The Beatles or even Bill Halley and his Comets or Chuck Berry and all of the rock that followed (or Black Sabbath and all of metal that followed) and I wasn't so sure. I may not like pastry stouts very much, just like black metal isn't my thing. But others might disagree.

I always think of the ridiculousness of the "beer flavored" expression in terms of other consumables that have many flavors. Ice cream that's ice cream flavored, for instance. Or soda pop that's soda pop flavored, is another. On IceCreamAdvocate they complain Rocky Road isn't even ice cream.

I'm so happy I found this thread. I just tasted a beer and dumped it out. It tasted like cream soda. It was supposed to be a barrel aged IPA. Sugar Bomb by Imperial Oak.

I've dumped and thrown out so many beers the past year. They just disgust me. And as someone mentioned a lot of these breweries are going to have a hard time getting people who like beer that taste like beer to come back.

One brewery I can think of that has completely lost me is Pipeworks. They use to be my favorite. They use to constantly focus on high ABV delicious IPAs. Now they're loading their beers with peanut butter, and a bunch of fruits I don't give a shit about. Not to mention the low ABV beers they're making which bore me.

I dunno, maybe this stuff appeals more to the masses, but it grosses me out.

All I gotta say is thank God for Hop Butcher.

You can always go back 30 years ago when there were very few regional beers in the US.

too far is exploding refermenters and glitter.

My two favorite recent releases are a coffee/cheesecake/pumpkin spice imperial stout from Track 7, and a Reece's PB cup imperial porter from New Glory, both in Sacramento. I'm totally down with pastry stouts as long as they are no more than slightly sweet (which does disqualify quite a few).

That is the obvious solution, but it neglects the pleasure some people get by complaining.

It has to be borne in mind that the Reinheitsgebot had NOTHING to do with beer quality. It was simply a measure put in place to protect wheat supply to Bavarian bakers.Even then it only applied to a part of what is now Bavaria.
Until just after reunification German brewers used all matters of ingredients just as the Belgians do now. It was German brewers who introduced rice into US brewing.

Was just in the beer store with my brother taking about how if you were not interested in 47 kinds of hazy ipa selection had actually decreased from 5 years ago. Like someone else said I still find something I want but quality lagers not in a 16 dollar 4 pack are becoming harder to find. I guess I look at it like all the appliances that I have replaced at my house after 30 years of use and the repairman says they don’t make things like they used to. Glad to here I’m not alone in shaking my head at a lot of new beer trends. And to the genius who says just don’t buy it a couple of posts above me it’s a beer discussion board with your attitude we should just shut every thread down.

That, sir, is not nearly as romantic and compelling a thing to believe as the comment to which you reply. You really need to stop clouding this issue with facts.

I'm not sure how you can understand the intent of my post and believe that the post from @marquis contradicts it in any way. In my eyes, the only "romantic" part of my post was the final line (and it was certainly guilty in that regard). To each their own. :beers:

I believe when people say they want 'beer that tastes like beer', they mean they don't want beer that was brewed to taste and look like a fruit smoothie or a milkshake.
