Store near me has four 2021 varieties with the base selling for about $14/bottle. Another place just has the base.

Just out of curiosity being a former Michigander @BigIronH where did you buy this?
Yes, it is hard to pull the trigger on "beer" where you are paying ridiculous coin. I went back in my Access database and in 2016 i paid $64.99 in PHX for a 500 ml bottle of "Rare", most i ever paid per ounce. Now mind you it was very good but looking back i am not sure it was worth the premium when the base beer is so consistently good and one could have bought 4-5 addition BCBS with that coin.
Having relocated to Western North Carolina earlier this year, and not sure if because of ABV regs, all we received in the Greenville SC Total Wine was Cherry, Classic Cola, and 14, all were $25 or under which i was able to pick up 2 of each between the online store and in-person on Saturday - i am OK with paying and trying the spendy BCBS variants for that price. I went to my local in Hendersonville, NC on Black Friday morning and the variants were all gone within 1/2 hour (assuming my local received the same variants) but my buddy and i were able to enjoy some KBS variants on tap so all was not lost!
Am curious to hear your judgment of DB value. It would be great if you can ping me on your post!
    Cheers,
    Tom

Bought two bottles of base 2021 on Saturday, but overall an annoying experience. Stop here if you don't want to suffer through the rant.

No 2021 on the shelf, but lots of 2020.

Asked a guy that has been working at this store for a long time if they had any 2021 and he brought me to a back room where they had base plus three variants. I took two base and went to the register, where the young woman who started after a recent ownership change, and seems to be connected to the owners, said, "oh, these are only supposed to be sold in combination." Then she scolded (in front of me) the very nice older guy who gave me the beer, who has worked there forever . She told him they were supposed to be sold in combination with the old 2020s they still have on the shelf. All the while I'm standing there not knowing if that means she isn't going to sell them to me, and my anger is rising. She finally completed the sale, but what a terrible experience.

First off, none of that discussion should have taken place in front of me.

Secondly, combination requirements are an abomination. Don't make me buy something I don't want in order to get something I do want.

Thirdly, if you are going to require a combination, at least make it with a whale. Why did she think the base BCBS was worthy of requiring a combination? The same base that they couldn't sell out of last year? I could almost understand it for the harder-to-find variants, but this was just stupid.

It's a store I often go to, but I'm rethinking that now......

That's a really shitty experience. Care to share what store it is? Seeing as I'm in Mass I might have to avoid it. Understandable if you don't want to share the name of it after telling that story tho

I bought two bottles of 2015 just before I heard about the recall. I went back to the store where I purchased - they hadn't heard about the recall yet and offered me a refund if there was any issue, but the one I drank back then was just fine. I still have the other bottle, part of a now 7-year vertical 2015-2021. Too many years for a vertical tasting, though.....

I drank a 2019 for this tasting and I thought it tasted great. I guess when you brew that quantity there’s bound to be bottle variety.

Stopped in the local TW yesterday…stacks of cases of 2019 and 2021… I bought one of each…tons of this year’s variants too…the 14, cherry wood, and cola…

Agreed. It's also very short sided. You're not only forcing the customer to buy something they likely don't want, it also forces them to spend more money. That invariably leaves a bad taste in a customer's mouth... the kind of bad taste that leads to a loss of business.

I understand that the store was anxious to unload old inventory, but there are creative ways to achieve that outcome without making the customer feel like he's being screwed. If I were this store, I'd offer both individual bottles and a vintage combination. Play up the fact that customers have the opportunity to purchase a mini vertical BCBS tasting, and/or that they have a unique opportunity to purchase a "library" selection with the current release. Maybe even give customers a small break on the price if they buy the combination.

There are any number of ways to make this an attractive, opportunistic experience, rather than making the customer feel like he's being taken advantage of, and forced to buy old, unwanted product.

Got regular and every variant except Proprietors in SEPA; didn't have to stand in line for it either. They were probably sending out 2019 and 2020 to make up for the relative lack of 2021; I was told the yield this year was 40% of last year's.

The flood didn't affect Ralphius at all; what it did do was completely destroy the sour cellar.

The last three years are sitting on shelves in large quantities here. A local shop was selling them for $9.99 to try and move them.

I knew the cellar was a complete loss. I thought I saw something on their facbook page about there being less due to Ida. I could be wrong.

Maybe because they had so much of the unsold stock from prior years.

Perhaps AB InBev (Goose Island) has learned that demand for BCBS (in the current single bottle format) is not what it was in the recent past?

    Cheers!

No kidding. I was in disbelief. What?

All the variants still available (In California). An unopened case of regular 2021 BCBS just sitting there. No bites.

I took one each of all they had as I always do, but this year was unlike anything I have ever seen before.

2015. Despite the infection, in my opinion, this was the last great stand for Goose Island. Regular BCBS (uninfected) and Regal Rye were 5/5 100 beers for me. Unbelievably delicious. As hard as I tried, I simply could not wait 5 years, in 4 years all gone, and I bought almost an entire case of 2015 Regular BCBS and 4 of Regal Rye. So good. How I wish Goose Island could turn the clock back.

Profit maximization is the name of the game. With diffwewntiable products, you have to find a way to stand out and stay relevant. They have done that with only only rotating variants but also bringing back classics and trying to showcase barrels via the reserve beers. But they also are raising prices, and you can’t expect that demand will be as high when you raise prices. So, it becomes a game of how can we maximize profits? What is the price sweet spot?
