The general medical recommendation is no more than two "drinks" (roughly = 2 12 oz. 5% abv beers) a day for men, only one for women. I'm 70 this year, and find that I like the high abv beers less and less... I drink generally one beer per eve., each day of the week If I have a higher abv beer (lately "Merry Monkey") I split it with my wife (if she's willing). I got the habit of one per afternoon or eve. from living in France, where there is the custom of "apéro" each afternoon. I just drink beer instead of the typical French drinks. I find that drinking a lot of beer in a sitting renders the beer tasteless.

This is one that you really need to pay attention to at times, as two 5% beers are way different than two 10% beers. It sounds a little silly now but I have had instances where I said to myself okay I am only going to have two beers tonight and then I opened the fridge and saw two new beers I have been meaning to try, and before I knew it I just had 2X the amount of alcohol/carbs/calories than I had intended. It's easier to do than one may think, as those 12 oz bottles all looked the same and contained the same amount of liquid

Yes, its best to drink less, but also those Surgeon General recommendations are based on population data and every individual is different, so don't get too hung up over it.
I usually open a 6 pack, but probably drink a total of 4 of them on average. I try each one, but don't finish it. For me, that's the right balance where I can still function, sleep well, and wake up the next day feeling 100%.

As it's Christmas I've been drinking at least two a day. Usually one strong and another around the 5% mark. As you get older it's harder to shake off the fat it adds. So I try not to go overboard like I used to.

Started to respond with a long polemic on what everyone already knows. But today's my birthday, so using that as an excuse to overdo it. Beer and wine at a fancy French restaurant, and now home with a nightcap, because, well, you know. At my advanced age I know the sweet spot. Funny, this may be tricky when you're younger, but seems pretty simple now.

Look man, if your consumption is not getting in the way of your job productivity and close personal relationships, then you're good.

If/when it starts to intrude upon either, then it's time to re-evaluate.

After reading over all of these, I’m wondering if I should put more thought into my method…

To hell with it, I’ll have another beer.

1 NA + 1 full ABV a day on average, typically a 16 oz IPA or a stout. On a wild and crazy day I might have two beers at the local brewery. The NA makes me appreciate the full ABV and cuts down on the calories. I drink plenty of bourbon and other spirits so it is not like I am severely limiting my alcohol. It is more of a calorie issue. For my body, beers is very effective at adding pounds.

Same, the combination of the yeast and everything else just seems to be a great recipe for murder on my body in comparison to other foods and beverages.

well, I guess those two are a complete list if you find a body morphology trending towards Jabba the Hutt to be acceptable. I would add a third criterion: physical condition trending the wrong direction.

I feel like they all go hand in hand. I.E. if there’s no problem with your family or job, you’re probably not drinking enough to turn into Jabba the Hutt. I’ve never met an alcoholic that could drink that much and not have issues at home.

    Cheers.

My personal benchmark is if the trendline of physical condition change is headed TOWARD Jabba the Hutt, then it is time to change. Sure, you lose relationships and job performance long before to morph into JtheH, but the key is which direction you are headed, and how fast you are getting there. You can be headed the wrong direction from a physical standpoint BEFORE it has significant effect on relationships and job performance.

36 to 48 ounces per day. 3 bottles or 3 pints. Have developed a habit of drinking a glass of water with each serving.

Maybe so. Point being, when alcohol begins to have a negative effect in your life, your physical condition is likely the least of your worries. Cheers to being healthy Bill.
