Ex Novo is expanding even further west, this time in a neat project in Hillsboro that also includes Sizzle Pie, The Sudra, and Grand Central Bakery.

Two blocks west of Noble Hop Bierhaus (formerly McNally's Taproom). Neat!

Your post got me to thinking. One of the things I loved about PDX when I first moved here in 04, is that it seemed like there were great taphouses and microbreweries pretty much everywhere. There was never a time I needed to drive more than 5 minutes to find a good beer

Yet in comparison to the current beer landscape in PDX, the 2004 version is/was a barren wasteland. It's nothing short of mind boggling how easy it is to find good beer in PDX, in pretty much any and every style you might like.

Over the past few years, it has gotten easier to find good beer in the Beaverton and Hillsboro areas too.

It's the same in the Lake Oswego area out where we live. Breakside, NW Growlers, the Hop n Cork (just to name a few). None of those places were around back in the day.

They all seem to be thriving as well.

Umm, asking for a "friend' what about Oregon City? I, uh my Friend, really wants to hit up Benchmade's Mothership there as he hopefully is planning a PDX invasion this year.

Oregon City is a weird place. I like Feckin Irish..they used to have a cool hobo place down by the rail tracks . I think they moved

They closed goddamn it. They had a great stout with Father Jack on the label.
Coin Toss makes reasonable beers and Oregon City Brewery

Wait. Did you just mention Hobo's while my friend wants to visit a knife factory? How do you think I, uh my friend, got those 4-1/2 warm Coors Lights to start?

A side question: Why does suburban PDX seem to be home to a lot of knife companies? The above mentioned Benchmade, obviously, but Columbia River Knife and Tool is nearby, and Gerber, Kershaw (who make perfectly good Every Day Carry knives at very reasonable prices. I own a couple of each.) are somewhere in the area, and, Leatherman, whose Wave I do not leave the premises without, has a PDX addy. Why is that?

SOG has an official address in Lynwood WA, but I think all their manufacturing is done off-shore.

Have not been hugely impressed with any of the breweries in the area, but Arch Bridge taphouse is pretty outstanding. Highland Stillhouse has a decent tap selection as well, with an even better whiskey, bourbon and single malt selection (if that floats your friend's boat). Would also recommend the Growler Run. Oregon City is pretty sizeable, so depending on where he/she is staying, any one of these places might work for them.

There's also a Market of Choice just up the street from Arch Bridge, if your friend wants to grab some bottles/cans. Assuming he/she can't get their needs met over at Arch Bridge (which is pretty unimaginable frankly).

Van Henion beers have hit PDX - an IPA and a Helles.

And best of all, they're in 12oz cans.

According to Breakside's Instagram - Wanderjack is returning this week. I sure do love that beer.

And I'd have no problem drinking Wanderjack year-round.

Machine House’s Winter Warmer is exactly what I want in the style. So, so good.

I, too, would drink Wanderjack year round.

This is way off topic and not PacNW, but I picked up a couple CANS of Saison Dupont and it’s just as good as bottled. Or better? $5.50 for a 500ml can is a damn steal. I’m sad I only bought two.

I too, will drink Wanderjack year round, but if that Dupont can sounded like a good deal, you should grab some Saison d'Erpe-Mere- I bought it at Mongers and was sad I only bought one. For the $4/12oz or so, not many better saisons around town.

I will definitely look for that!

Oh, and to pull it back to Oregon news, Fort George announced the 2022 Matryoshka variants:
    • Vanilla and Ginger
    • Vanilla and Cardamom
    • Vanilla and Cinnamon
    • Vanilla, Ginger, Cardamom, Cinnamon, and Coffee
All are 14% with the same barrel combo (bourbon and whiskey) as the 2022 base. I didn't love the rum barrels last year, so I'm for it.
