For the first time since I had the Sam Adams recipe at least 8-10 years ago, I saw this beer was then brewed by Platform brewing out of Cleveland. Today I picked up a six pack and although it says in large font “New Albion Brewing Company”, when you read the small print it says “brewed and canned by Brewdog Brewing in Winchester OH for New Albion brewing Company”. So I guess this is the 3rd reincarnation from the original from the 1970’s? For what it’s worth I really liked the Sam Adams version and really like this new replication quite a lot.

Wasn’t sure whether we need to add a new beer or rate this version under Platform Brewing. I want to make sure my rating of this beer I bought is done to the correct brewer.

The McAuliffe family has been working with Platform for a while now.
I don't recall seeing if it was packaged for wider distribution, or just local sales.
I had the Sam Adams version and really liked it too. In fact one of the homebrew magazines did a peice on it with Jack M and Jim Koch, including a recipe.
I've been brewing a variation on it for a while now, though at this point so much has been changed that it's not quite the same anymore.

Got a copy of that recipe you’d be willing to share?

There’s no reason to rate anything under Platform since that’s not the correct beer and that partnership is probably no more. Just as that beer was listed under Platform, you’ll find the Brewdog version listed under Brewdog.

Thanks @zid, when I searched “New Albion Ale” previously only the Sam adams retired version and Platform popped up. Though I had to add a new beer, but then I found it under Brewdog. I think others have mentioned that the search on here is tricky if you only type in a beer name.

Shouldn't New Albion Brewing Co., even though a contract-brewer, have it's own listing? Pabst brands aren't listed under Molson Coors or City Brewing Co.

Based on @Todd 's post "How to Add Beers" in the help section - yes, it should.

That was my first thought as well... but inconsistency with stuff like this drives me a little batty, so I've conditioned myself to look past it for health reasons. All of the talk about BA's database eventually merging with the Untappd one has helped me a lot in that regard. I don't want to be Sisyphus. Untappd also has this beer listed under the various physical brewers. Despite there being a listing for the BrewDog version on Untappd (that simply has the ale name as "New Albion") the first 20ish uploaded pictures under the Platform "New Albion Pale Ale" listing are basically either of the BrewDog beer or random Platform IPAs (plus one pic of T.F. Brewing's Albion Trippel just to see if people are paying attention). I really don't understand how someone can be bothered enough to take a picture of a beer, provide a rating of a beer, and upload all of that to a phone app... but not bothered enough to put it with the right beer listing.

I suppose the press releases, marketing, packaging, etc for the New Albion resurrections have helped to generate listings under the physical brewers. BBC was literally in the picture* even if their name wasn't exactly on the bottle. Platform had their name above New Albion on the can. And now BrewDog has included a New Albion non-alcoholic stout in their "BrewDog & Friends" non-alcoholic beer club box. Nothing says "New Albion" like a NA beer in a BrewDog box.

*OK guys, now let me see those smiles

Firstly, kudos for your Greek mythology reference.

It seems to me that creating a single New Albion Brewing entry could cause 'confusion' since there seems to be three different beers here:
    • New Albion - BBC (Sam Adams)
    • New Albion - Platform
    • New Albion - BrewDog
Is (was) the intention that all of those three 'versions' were brewed to be the same (i.e., same ingredients, same brewing process,...)?

Perhaps it would be 'best' to have three separate entries to recognize differences in product?

    Cheers!

At the time, Boston Beer owned the trademark as I remember it after Koch had simply registered it when the trademark was not renewed , so that was simply a BBC product using the 'dba' of New Albion.

Koch then gave the trademark to McAullife's daughter, Renée DeLuca, who formed The Brewer’s Daughter Beer Co., LLC, which owns the "New Albion" name and contracted with Platform and now Brewdog to brew it?

The US Patent & Trademark Office's TESS system agrees with that:

I should have pointed out that distinction. I think they gave McAullife the profits.
I think BBC used the yeast from New Albion. I have absolutely no knowledge on any of the later versions.

    Chris,

According to the below linked article you are correct here.

“The yeast used is of the original strain, which has been carefully preserved at the University of California since 1977.”

It is nice that Jim Koch permitted this to happen; lots of breweries prefer to brew with house yeast strains.

FWIW, in the 2013 BYO clone recipe they detailed “White Labs - London Ale Yeast WLP013” which is purportedly the Worthington White Shield strain.

    Cheers!

Chris, I was traveling to Great Britain frequently in the 1990's for business and I fell in love with Cask Ales. I drank a lot of differing brands but at this point in time I can't remember them all. It is entirely possible I had a pint of Worthington White Shield during one of those many trips but...

On a related note it was my love of Cask Ales that got me into homebrewing. I could not get British type Cask Ales readily when I was back in the US so I decided to brew my own. My first batch was a Munton's kit beer branded as Traditional Bitter Ale. And that batch was bottle conditioned so technically a Real Ale to boot.

    Cheers!

It was around in the 1990s, IIRC, imported by Texas-based Noble Union. And didn't Molson Coors (the owners) also bring it in a few years back?

Primarily known as a bottle-conditioned brew, IIRC.
