User Location: Make it mandatory or more visible

We used to be able to, as well as list our town. I live in Bellingham WA, and used to list my location as Beeringham or Brewingham (which now the local brewers are actually using). This was done away with 10-12 years ago.

 

I think this is a cool feature and should be brought back. Oh well. The opinion of one man… Cheers.

 

On a large enough scale it is quite precise.

 

I have enough international friends and co-workers that I actually believed the Kiribati thing for a while until content of your posts didn't match up. I guess I don't understand the whole fictitious location thing. I hate the state I live in but I don't mislead people by making up alternative locations.

 

Fun. Mostly for fun. And a wee bit of a protest against the expansion of NBS.

 

I wasn't pinpointing, just trying not to rile "others," if you catch my drift.

And it's those "others" who are obviously hiding their true locations... and it makes you wonder about their sincerity, no?

I’m fine with not having my location visible, just like on social media in general. But I wouldn’t ask for some specific regionally-based information without narrowing it down. “What’s the best beer you get—can you guess where?”

Maybe this is another thread, but I would like to see all users who post have an avatar. I’d rather see that become a thing.

No location is annoying? No more or less to me than users that lock their profile so no one can see it. You know who you are!

 

I don't necessarily agree that it should be mandatory, but it would be nice. I will go further (kinda sideways) and suggest that we should be able to enter a city name in our profile and not just your state. Being in Cincy I don't know about the local Cleveland stuff (3 and a half hours away). Same with Philly people and Pittsburgh. And Cali is like 11 hours long from top to bottom. I think this would help in the area of "I just saw Beer X at my store today" and may incite nostalgic conversation like "Oh, you live in Hoboken? I saw Sinatra drinking a (insert local beer) at (insert local bar) there back in '63"

 

Well this thread ended up running longer than expected. I do check out users' locations for various and sundry reasons often enough to find it mildly annoying when it is missing. Requiring it seems unnecessary, though.

It is funny that while reading the posts here, I forgot that I am actually a culprit of faking my location, sorta-kinda. I've done some soul searching and decided I don't feel that guilty for listing DC whilst actually living in the beltway of Northern Virginia

 

I could understand privacy concerns of we had to list our actual city, but just your state or country isn't really a big deal. I'm pretty sure frequent posters eventually give away enough info to at least identify their metro areas.

 

I thought you were rebelling against the merging of regional forums. Seemed logical.
