User Location: Make it mandatory or more visible

    i remember they did this on some forums back in the early 2000s when marketing and user tracking was just getting started. in protest, many users left certain forums (the ones that did it by IP address), while those that remained made their location funny (vostok station - antarctica, hell - USA, benis - iran). if BA implemented this again, it would not do what you'd think it'd do.

    Before 2012, we were using the forum that I built, which had an open location field. It was basically useless as many would make up cities, drop in random text, or use it for spam. This forum software has an open location field too, but I was able to hack it to use real locations. Not perfect, but better than the alternatives and it allows us to target emails better and create some "local" lists.

    Anyway. We're not going to force users to select their location or add an open field for city, but I'll explore any new solutions when we finally upgrade our forum.

    Locking this one down now...
