I am now gun-shy about pizza outside of the "Pizza Belt", ever since I unsuspectingly ordered a "St. Louis style" pizza at a brewery in St. Louis. (It's a real thing, and it's fucking terrible)

So now I do some due diligence. Pictures from those places look great.

Yeah, don't be afraid. There is a lot of very legit pizza in Portland. Beyond what @DefenCorps mentioned, there are some excellent Detroit style pies around town too. Check out the Ranch Pizza inside Baerlic Brewing. Baerlic has also become one of my favorite breweries in town, and they always have a wide selection of solid beers. The Detroit style pizza at Assembly is also outstanding, though the beer is just ok, IMO.

That's a great list of cultural stops. I would add Lan Su, the Chinese Garden. Like the Japanese Garden it has strong ties to it's land of origin, though it's a very different style of garden. It's in Old Town - be prepared to see some homeless people. But in that, too, you'd get an authentic taste of real life Portland these days.

Here's a mini update on the state of beer at PDX while most of the airport is under construction. I didn't get to D or E Gates, but here's what's available at B and C Gates:

    Henry's Tavern
has a couple dozen taps which offer good regional selection at sensible prices (example: $7 for a pint of Bodhizafa). Henry's has also offered growler fills in the past, though I didn't have time to confirm that today.

Bottles/cans are available at the Made in Oregon and Timberline shops. Made in Oregon has the larger selection and fresher beers ($1.85 for a can of pFriem IPA canned on 2/16). Timberline has a different selection, including Washington beers. (I still might go back for the 2021 Wander Earlybird BA Stout.)

Lardo Country Store is open, and offers a few Deschutes 6-packs. Their taplist, however, is very disappointing: Heineken, Modelo, and AB-InBev craft (10 Barrel, Hop Valley). A damn shame. The taplists at Lardo locations are usually good.

Yikes. I'm guessing Lardo isn't in control of that taplist and the airport must control it with their contracts?

What space did Lardo take over? I wonder if there was an existing contract in that location that had to be honored.

I think it was the Kenny and Zuke's deli spot. I was reading a couple things today and think that's what I saw.

Anything else going on up there this weekend other than the Chuckanut Smoke Beer event? Thinking I might have to do my trip up for that this weekend and hit HotD as well.

I'm an old guy who remembers Cartright Beer, the old tiny Portland Brewing Co. NW spot, Bridgeport in its glory years , the Widmer microbrewery at B. Moloch downtown, and early McMenamins. Take a trip down memory lane. Anybody with time to spare from the latest and greatest could make a side trip to any McMenamin spot and have a laid back brew at Lucky Labrador Hawthorne or Quimby. Make a toast to the surviving big legacy brewers at Deschutes, with a cask ale at their downtown spot. And Produce Row tavern on the Lower East Side, if it still exists.

I remember all those places, but the beer scene in PDX has really evolved since those days (I first visited PDX in the early 90s). The Lucky Lab over on SE Hawthorne probably best captures the vibe you're referencing now, and still looks and feels much the way it did when I first came to PDX. Edgefield looks the same as you drive up to it, but once you park your car and walk around you notice all the expansions (distillery, golf course, additional watering holes, etc.). The artwork in the main building hasn't changed much, and there's a similar vibe, but the Black Rabbit restaurant and bar area have really been gussied up. Gone are the days when breakfast was included in the price of lodging there. There's very much a "Joe Tourist" feel to the place now.

It's hard to describe, but I really feel as if the McM establishments have lost something. Prices have sky rocketed and food quality has dropped. There's very much a "who gives a shit" attitude at the McM's I've visited over the past few years (I very rarely visit any of the McM establishments any more).

Deschutes is still around of course, but they're a relative new comer to PDX. It's a popular spot, but it's usually quite crowded and isn't the most easy going place to hang out with a beer. It's often difficult to find a spot at the bar and waits for a table in excess of an hour are not unusual.

All the other places you mention are long gone. The Horse Brass is still around, but I feel as if it's never been the same since Don Younger's passing. COVID didn't help of course (they were closed for quite some time).

PDX is still a great beer city, that much hasn't changed, but it's nothing like the PDX you remember and are referencing in your post.

I really miss Bridgeport. The Ebinezer was my favorite Winter Warmer of all times. Old Knucklehead was a great Barleywine.

Anybody know if PtY will be on tap this weekend anywhere in the PDX area?
