Greetings Fellow Midwesterners, will be in Austin for work a bit here & there in the next month. Are there any good beer options in the immediate vicinity, or within easy driving distance? Would also be very interested in hearing about any good little breweries along the border of Iowa. And yes, I've already done the MapQuest thing to figure out how long it would take me to get to Decorah. Thanks.
I think Worth Brewing is the closest to the border. They have pretty limited hours however. http://worthbrewing.com/
Be sure to visit the Old Mill Restaurant in Austin. Owner really knows & cares about beer w/great selection. Great food too! Walleye is to die for. As for beer stores, my opinion is Hy Vee first, Apollo second. +1 for Worth in Iowa short drive fun place. Buy a growler to go. You can order food from the place next door and they will deliver it to your table.
Worth sounds great. I'm only down during the week, maybe I'll have to schedule myself for a Wednesday. Old Mill looks like it'll be my first dinner in Austin!
Only two days a week, which is only one night...& between Toppling Goliath, Worth, & the Old Mill, I'm set for three weeks!
I guess you are obligated to mule me beer. I go to Kuhnhenn Solstice, you go to Austin. This is just poetic. If you find a beer aged in spent Spam cans I would like to try it. Hopefully proper aging will bring out the zeak (squirrel meat) notes.
I have a pellet gun. I have beer. Thars plenty of squirrels in the back yard. I'll soon be at SPAM ground zero. Be careful what you wish for...
Oooh, that would be marvelous! Due to family obligations, I couldn't join the van-pool of Twin Cities nut-jobs who drove down on Saturday...when the roads are clear I'll be down, I'll certainly let you know!
It is about 30 minutes from Northwood to Clear Lake (where Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper performed last). You can also come check out the only standing Frank Lloyd Wright hotel in the world in Mason City, IA, also home to Meridith Wilson (The Music Man), Bill Baird (Sound of Music Puppets) and Mason City Brewing (opening mid to late January) and then me, and a great group of IP beer traders. All of that would be about an hour from Austin. Head to Rochester for Kinney Creek Brewing, the Tap House and a few great beer stores, such as Andy's. If you're into hiking/skiing let me know I know some great places around there too. Where are you coming from, exactly?
