After getting called out by @GreenBayBA yesterday for not having a review done on this beer, I took one off the "to be reviewed" pile and got one done.

Appearance: Gold with some particles in suspension, good head.

Smell: Starts with grapefruit, then more tropical fruit notes.

Taste: Nice solidly bitter arrival with plenty of citrus, then balances out with moderate sweetness and tropical fruit flavors. Kind of a citrus pith finish.

Overall: This is kind of a mix between an old school DIPA and the more modern takes on the style. Good bitterness but also features the tropical fruit notes that are more common today. A good beer!

Good morning, Weekenders! Yesterday I eschewed the BeerAdvocate Extreme Beer Box (in favor of @JayORear 's extreme beer box  ), but today I'm diving back in, starting with Calf and Half.

This was not one of the beers I was highly anticipating, as I'm not a fan of blueberries. I gave my wife the choice between this one and Bananas Foster, and she opted with this one. Still, blueberries in big stouts can definitely work for me, with Lizard of Koz being a delicious and decadent example.

Calf and Half has tons of blueberry on the nose, obvious from several feet away. This is not a great start for me, but it might be a lovely start for you - if you're a fan of blueberries. Up close, the bourbon, coconut, and malt base combine with the still prominent blueberries to give an impression of blueberry pancakes. OK, now we're talking (I hate blueberry pancakes - I'm a texture eater - but this smells fantastic).

On the palate, this beer is simply stunning. Thick and creamy, with layers and waves of flavor. It's like a chocolate-blueberry muffin sprinkled with coconut flakes and soaked in bourbon. I don't actually know if that sounds good, but it damn sure tastes good!

Full tasting notes in the review, below.

This is an absolute banger of a beer, and definitely in contention for the most pleasant surprise of the box - at least, for me.

    Cheers!

Cheboygan Oatmeal Cookie Stout courtesy of @Whyteboar. My first beer from this brewery received in a recent NBW LIF.

Pours a deep brown with nice bubbly head that dissipates fairly slowly. Appears to be a little thinner than expected.

Aroma is dominated by roasted malts. A hint of coffee and baking chocolate. Oatmeal cookie isn’t brought to mind, but it does smell very nice.

The oatmeal cookie promised in the name comes out in the sip. It sneaks up on you though as a series of flavour hints poking out periodically through the sip to the swallow. There is a little coffee as well. No sweetness that one would associate with a ‘cookie, stout.

The body is light, thin even, but not watery. Very drinkable.

This was nice, and not quite as expected. The lack of sweetness was very welcome. The cookie standing in the background made this quite drinkable in a way that a ‘pastry’ attempt at this idea would not be.

Bonus points for the fact that my wife loved it and stole about 1/2 the glass!!

    Thanks Craig!

One long but fun filled day for everyone it seems, hopefully you can get some rest on the flight tomorrow.

Funny Hawaii came up this week...short backstory, I have no desire to fly halfway around the globe for anything, just too far. Mrs Phisher wants to go to Hawaii someday, I say never.

This week (I must have done something annoying) she says to our oldest "lets send daddy somewhere he doesn't want to go, like Hawaii." Oldest responds "No, send him to Cherokee!" I cracked up, that is the school I teach at :joy:.

Having done that flight a few times - from the East coast, no less, including a direct flight from Honolulu to Newark ! - I don't enjoy it. But Hawai'i is pretty damn awesome. It's worth it, if you can get at least a week on the ground. Otherwise, it's too inconvenient and incurs that rough jet lag, especially on the way back.

The local beer scene in Hawai'i has exploded, too (as it has basically everywhere). Snorkeling, mountain climbing, football at 7 am, and craft beer? Yeah, it ain't so bad.

I couldn't imagine being on a plane that long. That is my fear, the jet lag to and fro, and I know you are right on the last part. One of those, once you do it it is amazing, its the committing that is the hard part. I'm sure the scenery and nature would blow my mind.

My sister in law and her husband were just there for their honeymoon a few months back. They loved it.

I would recommend going to Hawaii, *especially if the Mrs. wants to go .Its beauty is unmatched. Fly to LA ( a 4hr flight )spend the night . Up early next day Then direct to HI about a 5 ‘5 hr flight you’ll gain 6 hours on the way from east coast.

Good day BAs! Off to an oily and smooth start to this week's NBS thread, Yeah, I know I'm a recidivist but life's a bitch. Although I don't sit down with my spread sheets and decide months ahead what brewskis I'll suck down on Sunday, I do give it a minimum of thought. This sunday's New Breakfast Beer is the one I gambled on receiving from the BA Extreme Beer Box:

This was the one beer upon which I based my hopes for this box - I've never seen a Utopia except in pictures on the internet - would I buy one? Sure, but not from the secondary market - it's only beer! So I'll take a chance on receiving a WWS aged in Utopia barrels - some of the other selections may be good. And I got ONE!

Utopias Barrel aged World Wide Stout from Dogfish Head Brewing. 12 oz bottle part of the BeerAdvocate 2022 Extreme Beer Box from Halftime, Poughkeepsie, NY. $132.49 (Including tax and shipping), $0.720/oz. Stored at 40 degrees after purchase. Reviewed 20/2/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on bottle neck in yellow ink “D24010044 11”. Served at 55.5 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 60.4 degrees.
    Appearance – 4.
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18) clear.
Body – Ruby Brown (SRM 24), opaque. When rear-lite, where the light penetrates is ruby. Very fine effervescence continues throughout the glass.
Head – Average (Maximum 1.5 cm, aggressive center pour), almond, rapidly diminishing to a three mm crown constantly renewed by soft carbonation, and no cap.
    Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4.5 – Begins with slightly sweet chocolate, dark fruit, coffee, and faint oak. No hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 4.5 – Begins with chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruit (mostly dates and raisins), and a bit of coffee. No hops, no yeast. Ethanol (17.2 % ABV, as marked on container) is not hidden – the burning begins on the soft palate and continues down through the cardiac sphincter into the stomach where it eventually cools to mere magma. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 4.5– Medium, approaching syrupy, soft but titillating carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.5 Unremarkable appearance, other than the crown lasting longer than expected. No lacing but considering the ABV none was expected. Both the aroma and flavor tend to dates and raisins backed by coffee, light chocolate, and light coffee. Wood is present more in the aroma than the flavor, at least to my palate. Overall, a notch above the basic WWS.

New Beer #2: Double Broken Heels, an imperial hazy IPA from New Trail sent my way by @JayORear .

New Trail makes very damn good NE-style IPAs. This one is no exception, with a mouthfeel that is creamy and smooth - not quite on Tree House's level, but very, very nice.

The nose is intensely herbal and peppery. With Citra and Mosaic, that isn't necessarily a surprise, although the freshness of the beer likely plays a role in that expression. Much juicier on the palate, with notes of grapefruit, melon, mango, papaya, and lemon.

    Overall, a very enjoyable beer.

Yeah, for sure. I'm super proud of them, for all the work and practice they've put into this (and the associated performance they put on twice near home two weeks ago). My daughter (11 -- today!) is pretty shy and nervous, so it's pretty impressive to see her get up and sing a solo in front of a crowd of strangers. My son (8) is a huge goofball, so it's pretty impressive to see him sustain attention and discipline even for this shortened 10 minute performance, let alone the full one-hour performance they did before.

Super proud dad here. I'm going to (teasingly) try and turn today into a celebration of 11 years of parenting for me and my wife.

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass not sure when it was canned. Pours near pitch black, with a finger plus mocha head that leaves a few streaks of lace with solid retention. 4.25

Aroma chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, hints of coffee, and toffee. 4

Taste follows chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, coffee, and toffee. 4

Mouthfeel is a little bigger than average, not dry, soft carbonation, and at 8.6% ABV it drinks like that. 3.75

Overall this is exactly what you would expect by the name, I really wish it had a bigger body and a little more carbonation. Solid and worth a shot for sure. Thanks @jzeilinger for this can. 4

Lots of stuff. Friday night, I had Tundra (TIPA), Factory Direct (DDH IPA), and Power Stave (RIS). We took home a crowler of Peabo (Dunkelweizen). At lunch yesterday I had Glorzo (DIPA) and Timing & Structure (German pilsner). All of it was good, the place was really nice, big, spacious, close enough to walk and kid-friendly enough for us, but far enough and not obviously kid friendly that the thousands of other visiting kids and parents didn't clog it up.

I think you were the one that made the recommendation (I was going to go dig around and try to figure that out) -- if so, thank you!

That is awesome, I can’t wait to see what life holds for us as ours continue to grow up.

Congrats on 11 years of parenting to you and the mrs. I hope you all have a nice, peaceful, relaxing and rejuvenating trip. Also happy birthday to the 11 year old master Lego builder who is also a rising theatre star.

Good morning BAs! BBA Hunahpu’s by Cigar City:

2021 Lottery bottle. Poured at 57°. Black with ruby edges; dark tan head fizzled out quickly; poor cap retention, thin ring, a few spots of lace; thin legs on swirl. Bourbon nose with cinnamon, sweet plums and green chilies right behind; some boozy heat on the retro nasal. Taste follows nose; more sugary plums and sweet bourbon; figs, molasses and brown sugar; very light chocolate/cocoa nibs; bourbon and dark fruit finish. Hot bite on tongue from peppers and booze; full minus body, not at all adjuncty; smooth, silky feel; full mouth warmth from alcohol (13.3%) and hot peppers. Overall, loads of well balanced flavors; base and barrel merge seamlessly; long sweet bourbon and dark fruit linger leaving cinnamon and hot chilies sauce aftertaste. A sipper for sure!
