Grossman might have not had the Ballantine IPA available in his area. I regularly drank Ballantine Ale in the 70s, but I don't remember seeing the IPA on the west coast (mostly San Diego area). I did try the IPA in about 1976 when I moved to Chicago.

That's not what he says in his book, Beyond the Pale (pg 35):
And ads show the Falstaff version was available in California in the 1970s and 1980s.

I read your post an hour or two ago and grabbed a tallboy of Fiddlehead IPA at the local beer shop. Figured I'd give it a shot, It's really good. I'll have to try more Fiddlehead beers at some point.

Seems like it’s Wicked Weed Pernicious for me. Always available, usually fresh and at a decent price. I’ve gotten tired of overpriced IPAs that don’t deliver, and there’s a lot of them out there.

I go back and forth between Lagunitas IPA and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. But I lean toward the latter. A perfect balance of malt and Cascade hops and juuust a touch of sweetness. (I haven't learned to like the super hoppy beers and those with fruit adjuncts). And it has the remarkable advantage of being $16 for a twelve-pack here. It made me a fan of the West Coast IPA.

Lawson's Sip of Sunshine. I've been shocked (and elated) that we've been able to get a decent supply of this beer over the past few years. (and pretty fresh)

When I lived in CT I kept a pretty regular supply of Tree House Julius in the beer fridge. Since moving to CA, I’d say that Firestone Walker Mind Haze has probably been the most frequent IPA addition to the fridge.

If buying from a store, its usually Bells Two Hearted or Sierra Nevada Torpedo.

If I'm in a bar or restaurant, it is Kane Head High

Honestly, I feel like a lot of beer drinkers have migrated past "go-to" anything. I tend to grab whatever's fresh from breweries that I like. Although if I lived in VT I would be drinking Heady all the time. I drink a decent amount of Pliny but not enough to consider it a "go-to"

But as a Californian resident you would drink Heady "all the time"( a go to)if you lived in Vermont? This makes absolutely so sense .

    Dafuq:joy:

What IPA do you find yourself drinking a lot of? Name them all cuz im curious

Heady topper has been booboo since a few months after Rona hit.

heady is a special beer to me and probably my favorite of all time, hence why that would be a different case. Also it hasn’t been boo-boo, I’ve been consistently getting a box of fresh heady every couple months and it still tastes the same.

Honestly, the IPAs I have on hand nowadays are Monkish, Wondrous, and Pliny. I order a mixed case of monkish every 1.5-2 months, and I grab a 4 pack or 2 of whatever’s fresh at wondrous when I go every 2-3 weeks. When I go to Whole Foods (roughly every 2-3 weeks) I grab a bottle or two of Pliny. I’ve always kind of had that “gotta catch ‘EM all” approach to beer so I tend to reach for new stuff more than old favorites.

Rhinegeist Truth is mine. Solid IPA that isn’t too heavy, so I can knock back a few at a time and not get full or have palate fatigue.
