Justin. Did you ever have a chance to visit the old pub? That place justed exuded character and atmosphere. Beers were good and they always had several on cask, but what I'll always remember was the atmosphere and vibe. So laid back and chill, and the pizza by the slice wasn't half bad either. Very gentle pricing for food and drink rounded out the experience.

Try the Apex. Their online taplist says it's still on. The keg has been on for several weeks, so it's likely getting near the end, but that would be your best bet.

I went into the pub once, 10 years ago. I remember getting a flight of beers to taste, including a couple cask ales. We went midday between other breweries.

I miss being able to get cask ales. Oakshire hasn't really been using their cask engine anymore. Falling Sky doesn't use theirs. Bier Stein isn't using theirs. I remember going into Full Sail on the water the same trip I went to Bridgeport, and had like 5 pints of the Amber on cask. That beer is much better on cask than in bottles.

When I first visited Bham, I fell in love with Blue Heron Pale Ale. I still miss that beer.

Can we just turn this into an old-bridgeport (pre pearl district-ing) appreciation thread? sitting on a picnic table, eating pretzels with a pint of blue heron, porter or ipa, waiting for your turn at the dart board?

You need to make a trip to Seattle and just exclusively drink at Machine House.

    I'm game

I'm not much of a dart player, but I would grab a stack of local entertainment and brew newspapers and be completely entertained. A couple slices of pizza and a couple imperial pints would set me back no more than $10. The pretzels made nice ballast as well. It was easy to kill a couple of hours there and leave full with a nice buzz on. Abv. for their core beers was pretty reasonable, so I would typically leave in pretty good shape (even though I typically really didn't want to ever leave). I won't even mention my fondness for the bathroom facilities there.

Sounds like a blast. We have a cask only spot not an hour from here, but they are so hit and miss. Some beers are great, others are way past their prime. They won't even take responsibility for bad casks, just lame excuses about that's how these beers work.

I assume you're talking about the place that used to be called Brewer's Union. If you're looking for cask ales an hour from you (but in a different direction), Santiam Brewing in Salem is a British-style pub & brewery and has (I believe) four beers on cask at all times. I haven't been in there in years, but people seem to like them.

And to keep it thread-relevant, in Portland, Upright always has two rotating cask options and it's hard to go wrong with those in my experience.

There are comparable monuments at the Deschutes outlet in Portland. They are marked "P J Clarke", a legendary NYC bar. Those probably came from a closed PJC branch in Las Vegas.

Upright can do no wrong, every cask ale I've had there has been outstanding. I've been very impressed with the ones I've had at the ForeLand Study too. The porter that was on last weekend was perfect for a rainy Sunday.

Figured I'd give this a bump and point out that if anyone visiting happens to be staying at The Jupiter Hotel or Jupiter Next, Brewery 26 recently opened directly behind those two properties on Ankeny between 8th & 9th.

A friend and I stumbled across it after having brunch at Hey Love (in the Jupiter Next) on Sunday, so we stopped in. Nice, open spot with a couple TVs, pop-a-shot, and a big garage door for nice days. Some outdoor picnic table seating and at least one food truck (for now). I only had one beer (their flagship Crispy Clean IPA) which was a really well done traditional west coast IPA. I'll definitely be back to check out more of their offerings, particularly as the weather gets nicer.

Is that the old Tugboat Brewing location?

This is on the East side. I should've added SE before Ankeny, I suppose. The only Tugboat location I'm aware of was downtown across the alley from Bailey's (RIP).

Yes, right on Ankeny (but NE Ankeny instead of SE). Anyways, thanks!

Hey everyone, making my first trip out from the East Coast in about a week!

Read through the thread and have a solid list for breweries. FYI, my favorite breweries out here are Notch, Schilling, Silvaticus, Idle Hands…so lagers. Love UK ales, especially on cask. And I also dig New England IPAs, but not as much as the former.

Also, we’re staying at the Kimpton, and then the Courtyard downtown.

Breweries: Thinking Hair of the Dog, Deschutes, Great Notion, Wayfinder, Upright, Cascade, Breakside, and Chuckanaut.

Beer Bars: For beer bars thinking Apex and Belmont Station.

Wine: Also doing a wine tour with the girlfriend to hit up some Pinot Noir.

Now…the food is what I need recommendations for (or the beer part above if you have any).

    • We both love all kinds of food, she doesn’t like seafood so we could skip that.
    • We’d prefer places that are closer to our hotel, but we’ll venture out if there’s a “must stop” restaurant.
    • Staying three nights (technically four, but we land at midnight the first night). We’d like dinner to be more casual the first two nights, and a nice dinner the last night. We’re currently thinking Olympia Provisions, but we’re open to suggestions.
    • Also looking for breakfast, lunch, and coffee suggestions (I’m pretty into craft coffee).
    • Would like to have tacos somewhere for Cince de Mayo too.
Other activities: The last day we want to get some walking and sight seeing in. We’re thinking the Japanese Gardens. However if it rains, we’d need a back up option for that day.

Much appreciated everyone! I’ll pay you back ten fold with suggestions for the “other” Portland.

    Cheers

Breweries : good list but to make sure you get the priority order right - HotD, Upright, Chuckanut (best lagers in the country), Wayfinder = Breakside, Deschutes, Cascade =Great Notion. The recommendation is based on a combination of preference and ease of getting bottles and cans around town.
Consider adding to your itinerary- Ruse for hazies and IPAs, Occidental for more lagers and ForeLand's The Study for one of the more unique bars I've seen.

Food - I like Wayfinder (2-fer!). For Portland food and institutions, Olympia is fantastic, but also consider Higgins,Langbaan, Nimblefish, Ken's Artisan Pizza. @John_M recommended Pix Patisserie to me 13 years back and it's every bit as decadent now as ever.

Coffee - I'm not off in the deep end of coffee culture but have enjoyed Coava and Water Ave.

You're in good shape with your beer picks, though I'd recommend hitting up Beermongers if you're going to be at Apex anyway. Just so you can say you've been there. They always have a solid tap list and their packaged selection rivals anywhere else in the city. It's an institution.

Speaking of Beermongers, Genie's is a great low key breakfast spot (with solid Bloody Marys) right next door. If you eat a later breakfast, Beermongers opens at 11 and Apex opens at noon, so you can get your day started right. There are lots of great breakfast spots, but a couple of my faves of late have been My Vice (which will put you near Belmont Station) and Hey Love. On the west side of the river, I hear Toki is great, but I haven't been (yet).

For lunch, I'd highly recommend Lardo if you like sandwiches. They also have a great beer selection. For lunch or dinner, just up the road from Upright is Eem (killer Thai BBQ), or if they're busy, XLB (Chinese comfort food - I highly recommend the soup dumplings and popcorn chicken). There's also Jojo (a food truck next door to the SE John's Marketplace), that has killer fried chicken sandos and smash burgers.

As far as fancier dinner spots go, you can't go wrong with Le Pigeon if you can get a reservation. Other spots I like are Kachka (be ready to drink some vodka), Urban Farmer (farm-to-table steakhouse in The Nines hotel), and St. Jack (French). Olympia Provisions is great too, and it's right by HotD.

Eater PDX is seriously helpful with finding great dining options, and it's hard to go wrong with anything on their Eater 38 list: https://pdx.eater.com/maps/38-best-portland-oregon-restaurants

    Enjoy your trip!

Good selections/recommendations above, and I don't really have much to add. Just a couple amplifications maybe? Le Pigeon is a great recommendation, but it's a lot of food and a tad spendy (though totally worth it, IMHO). If you can't get a reservation, or it seems too much, consider their sister restaurant next door - Canards. It's a bit more low key and relaxed, and they don't take reservations, but the food there is every bit as good IMHO. They're located right next door to Le Pigeon. Get the duck stack with foie gras if you go to Canard.

I would also give an additional shout out to Lardo. The one near us in Lake Oswego has a solid tap list (between 15 and 20 well thought out tap selections), and during happy hour (3 to 6 pm every day) pint prices on everything are $4. I like their sandwiches a lot, but will often head down there just for the beer.
