Lol touché. But to quote a poorly written article on the subject I quickly googled in a panic: "All squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares."

Also we have yet to plumb the depths of Peruvian pisco brandy -or- I've learned of yet another thing in these past 5 minutes.

Very interesting. Straight jacket already has that sweetened bourbon Old Fashioned-esque thing going for it, the orange seems like a natural fit. Add in the Rev history with Fistmas, I'd be sold on that beer.

    1. Do something with a golden ticket in them like you do for C2E2 (?) for an experience at the next canning/tasting/etc. of a DW beer.
    2. Small batches of lower volume (i.e. not 32oz) crowlers available for draft variants. I super loved this during the height of the pandemic last year. Not the pandemic but getting to try draft only beers.
    3. As available/reasonable bring back in-person smallerish DW events. The first VSOJ event was so cool and maybe that's where you can fulfill my #2 wish.
    4. Variety packs of non-core DW beers with core DW beers similar to the mystery bags but could promote moving core products while getting people to try some of the more infrequent or including something that is low volume/single barrel. Something like Deth's Tar, Straight Jacket, Deth by Xxxxx / Xxxx Deth, and Single Barrel / Draft Only release or Experimental Deth. You do this with the Hero series in 12 packs and have beers in there only available in the mixed pack, why not Deep Wood beers?
    5. Continue what you did with Beer Temple for single / small volume barrel store picks. It's the hotness with bourbon. Keep it going with barrel aged beer.
    6. 8oz cans if pricing makes sense or for super limited stuff
    7. Continue with interesting barrels like apple brandy.
    8. I know it's likely impossible, but listing ages of beer going into the whole batch for beer, again, similar to some bourbon/whiskey showing age statements of blends.

Nobody asked for it, but everybody gets it: GuyFawkes' 2021/2022 Deep Woods Power Rankings.

Upon honest reflection...I was stunned by my favorites (and least favorites) this year. I've had at least 2-3 of each beer (sorry, liver) and this is where I'm at.

    1) Deth's Tar Yep, regular old Deth's Tar. When you take into account depth, drinkability, mouthfeel, and overall flavor, this is just a FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC batch of a barrel-aged stout. What was once my least favorite Deep Woods base beer absolutely shined this year. Bravo.

    2) Gravedigger Billy A welcome return of an old favorite did not disappoint. Smoky but not peat-y, robust but easy to drink, and one that rewards repeat visits. I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of Undertaker William.

    3) Dark Mode I'm stunned by how much I enjoyed this one. Sweet but roasty, with hints of dark fruit and a CRAZY drinkability / mouthfeel component. I could drink this in Siberia and I could drink it at the equator. I think the 'milk stout' label turned some folks off, but this is world class.

    4) Straight Jacket The fact that a solid batch of this legendary beer is at #4 speaks to the excellence of the barrel program at Revolution.

    5) Ryeway To Heaven See above. Perhaps a bit sweet this year, but you could easily swap 4 & 5. In fact, tomorrow I might do the same.

    6) Vanilla Deth An absolute masterclass in balance as far as a barrel aged vanilla stout goes. Better than the previous version.

    7) Strawberry Jacket I'm always a fan, and this again nailed the sweet, dry & boozy trifecta. Wouldn't mind if they did this every year.

    8) V.S.O.R. Not as cloying as the disappointing return of V.S.O.J., but "regular" Ryeway was better. Too sweet, not as balanced as the OG. This year, at least.

    9) Blackberry Finn The fruited stuff doesn't move me that much these days from Rev, but the dryness of the base beer was a nice compliment, and overall this was quite enjoyable.

    10) Deth By Raspberry It was a nice beer. I wish it was just Deth's Tar though. More a complement to Deth's Tar than a diss to this beer.

    11) Cafe Deth See above. Not a bad batch by any means, though.

    12) Supermassive Cafe Deth See above, and the regular was better / more balanced. To me, this beer is best served fresh from a keg.

    13) Maple Deth See above, but the worst of the 4.

    14) V.S.O.J. Yeah, I've had a lot of this, and I find it almost a parody of the original. A caramel bomb with no complexity; it's like sucking Wilford Brimley's mustache before he found out he needed to change his diet for the beetus. I'd give it a 3.5 or less, honestly. I guess you can't always catch lightning in a bottle (can?) twice.

As always, opinions come straight from my #trashpalate and I offer no apologies, nor do I claim any wisdom.

    Huzzah!!

The Deep Wood (perhaps Wood's, but not Woods) is a series of beer that I hold near and dear to my heart due to the quality, the local brewery, and the 12oz format.
@GuyFawkes - Are you missing Cuvee and On & On from your list? Or are you limiting your list to 12oz cans released from Rev after January 2021? I'm not always sure where to place those spring & summer releases - maybe their own list? Rev's announcement in late July '21 was for "FALL/WINTER LINEUP FOR THE 2021–22 DEEP WOOD SERIES" tells me that's where they have the cutoff.
And how DARE you put VSOJ b2 at the bottom and limit the flipper and trade value!?!:joy:
But seriously, I love that everyone has different tastes and palates! As long as we can all agree that us folks that live in the Chicago area are super spoiled with amazing beers!

Cuvee de Grace 2021 would rank pretty high, good catch...but I wouldn't count On & On Part 2. Gotta be brewed at the motherland!

And I seem to have #trashgrammar in regards to the series name.

Your respective lists are not complete unless you add Temple of Deth and Tarry Night!

Since the door was opened, here is my ranking (without the same excellent exposition @GuyFawkes provided). My ranking is based purely on personal enjoyability:

    Straight Jacket
    Deth's Tar
    VSOR
    Ryeway to Heaven
    Blackberry Finn
    VSOJ
    Strawberry Jacket
    Maple Jacket
    Vanilla Deth
    Supermassive
    Cafe Deth
    Deth by Raspberries
    Dark Mode
    Gravedigger Billy

Basically, I agree with the assessment that the mainstays were better than ever. Dark Mode just didn't do it for me - I'd much rather see a version of Thundertaker return as the "other" stout - and I've never cared for Gravedigger Billy. I did greatly and enjoy the VSO's as compliments to their respective originals and hope they continue on a semi-regular basis.

The pain and punishment reawakens after a number of years gone by!! But so delicious that you keep forgetting what happens after every can!! But why in the holy hell did Rev feel the need to go from a 12oz can to 16, sweet baby Jesus!!
Just for the love of god and everything holy do not put 1ZEnuff ever in a 16oz can unless you intend everyone to get blackout drunk!!

I used to drink 2-3 of the 12ozers so this could be a good size format for me.

Having a supermassive to make it through the 4th consecutive day of quarantine-based remote learning (oh, and me and the kids having mostly asymptomatic Covid :fearful:). Anyway, this can is better than the last one I had but still somewhat unbalanced. There’s an odd Cola quality to it and the coffee flavors lean more towards astringent than rich, but it’s enjoyable enough (though maybe that’s because it’s my first beer of the week #NAWeekdays).

It's a BIG coffee beer and was canned almost 8 months ago (released on 7/16/21), so the coffee is definitely going to fade. But "Cola"? Like BCBS Cola? Hmmm....
Mine were all SUPER, but were in the fridge since the day I got them and all gone by October.
The can of Cafe Deth from 10/15/21 that I had last night was stellar - but has been in the fridge the entire time as well.
