Some of you may have seen posts on social media about Pravda brewery in Ukraine and fundraising similar to Black is Beautiful beer, and Resilience from Sierra Nevada. They put their recipes on their website for people to brew. I made a copy and added US measurements next to the metric units provided. Could I have help or advice in converting them to 5 gal volume? In this Google drive folder, look at the folder for the simplified recipes. Thanks
Metric conversion is pretty easy for linear stuff like mass and volume, temperature can be tricky though. My advice, (and this is going to sound very snarky), is to do a really quick google search on metric to American measurements, and do the calculations. If you can't do that, you shouldn't have made it out of high school.
Thanks, OH. I already did that. I need help converting batch size to 5 gal from 20+ bbl. It's my understanding that conversion is not linear due to hop utilization. But I don't know for sure, I've never done it myself.
Hop utilization (bittering) is often higher in larger batches, mainly because of much longer times to cool the wort. But unless you are familiar with the equipment/process in question, it's really not possible to estimate the difference directly. Fortunately, it looks like the brewery provided target IBUs in the recipe. So I'd recommend tweaking the hop quantities to hit those target levels in your software of choice.
I looked at Pravda's recipes and they are pretty unimpressive (US-05 for everything). Nonetheless I'll try the Tripel (with Belgian yeast) and see how it goes. Will keep their name and label: Putin Huylo (which roughly translate to "dickhead", only much ruder)
Thanks, I tried doing this last night with brew cipher. I got the proportions correct then scaled to volume. Then adjusted IBUs. I think you're right I won't get it exactly right, but I could get close.
