Yeah last year I grew spinach and arugula and they were super easy to grow and tasted great fresh as well, however sitting on the ground cutting leaf by leaf with pair of scissors was very teadious and killed my back. Is there an easier /more way to harvest the lettuce? It would take me a 1/2 hr of cutting leaves just to get 4 bowls of lettuce for dinner. That is only reason I wasn’t planning to revisit, I’m good with buying a bag of organic from the store for a few bucks vs time and pain to harvest it from garden. Sorry we are off beer topic…..horray for malts yeast and hops (my personal pep rally).

I just yank em off, little quicker but yea if its about back I guess the only solution I can think of is elevating a pot. My favorite part of greens is its like having a bag of greens that doesn't go bad.

This could be a fun off topic forum thread. Maybe I'll start a gardening one today...

    Garden named beer, sort of:

Find a short and sturdy stool. It helps.

You could grow the lettuce in pots or trays elevated from the ground. The trade off is watering them more often than if they were on the ground. Tomatoes and zucchini though... You won't want to buy again when you realize how easy they are and how many a single plant produces.

I use long-bladed hedge clippers to cut my lettuces. You can cut a few heads at a time with these. Also, cut as low to the ground as possible, where the stem is the smallest.

One of these bad boys makes cutting out clumps of spinach or arugula or heads of lettuce pretty simple

Do they make metal ankle guards for use when slicing lettuce with that deathly-looking knife?

One of my local breweries gave away a free Cascade rhizome for Earth Day last year. I drilled a bunch holes in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket, put a few inches of pea gravel in, then filled with growing soil from the store. Thing grew better than I expected, 5 bines, about 14 ft high each. Need to build a better trellis this year. And ask if they're giving away more rhizomes.
