Do you get Henhouse up in Oregon? They have a nice saison in their core lineup. $12 for a 16oz 4 pack.

Not regularly. We get the occasional drop, and I think they sent up a number of sixtels of their tipa, but so far that's been it.

@distantmantra - If Rayon Vert or even Orval were marketed as saisons, would you think the brewers mischaracterized the beers after you tried them? Orval is more in the spirit of a saison than a ton of American beers marketed as such. If "Belgian pale" is a legitimate thing, then Orval and Saison Dupont could each be in that camp.

Way too many American saisons are barrel aged /funky, and many that aren't are too sweet instead. However, that doesn't make Orval or Rayon Vert saison-esque, since the fermentation character is so different imo

This is too true. Even though I found the 6 packs of Collette at a great price, and I love the Farmhouse Ale strain they use as part of the blend to ferment it; the beer finishes too sweet. They either need to supplement the grain bill with some sugar to get the beer to finish dryer, or they need to up the IBUs by about 10. Honestly, it would be a great Saison if they did both.

Agreed. But everyone there's a discussion on how to do saisons "right", along comes Dany saying "here's a beer. It's green. And has wormwood. It's a saison. "

This was always my go-to. Probably the package beer I bought most often. The Whole Foods in the Pearl almost always had it.

ForeLand's Rain Harvester is an excellent saison at the $15-16/4 pack of pints price.
Upright's being another batch of Six for their upcoming anniversary party. I'd expect crowlers at the $8-10/ crowler price.

E9 has Just Livin' in cans. A 4.5% saison dry hopped with First Gold and Wakatu hops.

not sure if this counts as a saison (???) but the Foreland Sea of Showers farmhouse ale is pretty delicious. ive had 3-4 cans so far and i really enjoy it. $3.49 for 16oz can which is a deal in my book

Is that a good deal? I don't buy many saisons/farmhouse ales, but unless I'm buying a sour or a BA beer of some sort, $12 to $14 for a four pack seems like the going rate for most local beers I see on the shelf.

Not trying to be snarky... just curious why you feel this would be a good deal. Are most saisons/farmhouse ale 4 packs more expensive than that?

This is the reason I started the thread. Unfortunately, way too many breweries think that Saisons/Farmhouse Ales should be expensive. I agree, over $12 for a 4 pack is too expensive, unless it has secondary additives like oak aging, Brett, souring bacteria, a combination of those, or even a sizeable fruit addition. Nowadays, I won't pay more than $12 for a 4 pack or $10 for a 6 pack.

well im seeing 16oz cans of IPAs regularly fetch $5 for 16oz cans, and most beers on tap are now at least $6 (without tip). so $3.49 sounds good to me.

At the very least, you got me interested in their farmhouse ales. Lardo has their Tales of Petrichor farmhouse ale on tap. Happy hour price is $4 for a pint. It's quite good.

I got to it kinda late, but Breakside collaborated with Von Ebert to make a can conditioned straight saison called Islands in the Stream. $3.5/pint, so a solid deal, though not to far off from either breweries' core pricing.

By law, any mention of this beer must include this promo photo of Matt Kollaja (Breakside) and Maddy McCarthy (Von Ebert) as Kenny and Dolly:

A $5 pint of saison seems unrealistic in 2022. If it exists, cherish it, but accept that it's ephemeral. Prices rise over time. Manage your expectations.

Holy Mountain's Forbidden Fruit grapefruit saison was very nice, and only $4 a can.
